Chapter 6

Gerard blinked his eyes open.  It was morning.  He realized what had woke him.  Frank squawking like a parakeet from the kitchen.

“Gerard… Gerard its time to get up, Oh Gerard its time to wake up,” Frank repeated again.

“I’m up, I’m up.” Gerard repeated, only louder the second time.

“Good morning.”  Frank sang from the kitchen.

Gerard threw the covers off him and started to get up.  There it was again.  The extra saliva started in his mouth.  The slightly sweaty forehead, the clammy hands, it was even worse than usual this morning.

“God I hope they do something about this shit soon.”  Gerard said swallowing all the extra spit.

He decided to just lie back down.

“What time is it?” He asked loudly.

“Ummm, its 8:45am,” Frank answered.

“Do you have diet coke or diet Sprite?”  Gerard asked still laying flat of his back.

Frank appeared in the doorway.

“You feel sick again?”  He asked.

“Yeah more so this morning than usual,” Gerard said with a flat tone.

“Your nerves probably aren’t helping things.  Would you like some plain toast or something to go with your coke?”  Frank asked genuinely.

“No, just a soda if you don’t mind,” Gerard said.

Gerard sat on the couch finishing his third diet coke.

“Look babe you are going to have to try and eat something.  You are going to waste away to nothing.”  Frank said cramming the last of his croissant into his mouth.

“I can’t.  Well… maybe some crackers.  Got any?”  Gerard asked.

“Ah nope sorry,” Frank said, “We can pick up some on the way if you want.”

“No let’s just go.  I want to get this over with.”  Gerard said standing up, checking his wallet for the form they had given him the day before.

“Okay,” Frank said grabbing his coat off the back of the chair near the door.

They entered the giant, revolving glass door to the outpatient section of the medical center.  They passed several rows of chairs in the waiting area and headed directly for the receptionist’s desk.

Gerard unfolded the yellow piece of paper and handed to the lady in scrubs behind the counter.

“Hi Mr. Way, if you could just sign the clipboard there, noting the time of your appointment and the time of your arrival, for me please.”  She asked of him.

He didn’t say a thing; he just did as he was told.

Frank glanced around the room and noticed two young ladies probably around 19 to 20 whispering looking their way.

“Miss is there somewhere we can sit that is more… private?”  Frank asked.

The nurse looked at him strangely, “Sure… I guess I can go ahead and seat you in sub-waiting.  Hold on let me get your bracelet.”

Gerard rolled his eyes.  “Great… I get to wear a bracelet.”

“Aww buddy maybe it will be black.”  Frank says punching Gerard in the arm playfully.

Gerard give him a “go to hell” look.

“Here you are Mr. Way.  We ask that you keep this own while you are in the building.  You may remove it once you are free to go home.”  The nurse instructed him sternly.

“Yes ma’am.”  He said sticking his left arm out.

The nurse put the bracelet on.

“This way gentlemen, this should be a little more private than the other waiting area.”  She assured them.

“Where is the nearest restroom?” Gerard asked before the nurse could leave.

“You walk out this door take a right.  Then it’s down the hall on the left.”  She directed pointing in the general direction of the bathroom.

“Thank you.”  Gerard told the lady as she began to leave the room.

“They will call you back in just a bit.”  She said leaving the room.

There they were in a gold tinted waiting room, just the two of them.  Gerard was gripping his shaking knee with one hand and biting a nail on the other.  Frank slid his hand down Gerard’s leg.  He quickly grabbed the nervous hand and pulled it close to his chest.

“Everything is going to be fine.”  Frank stressed the last word of his statement, pulling Gerard’s hand up to his mouth and kissing it lovingly.
