Chapter 7

Gerard laid his fluffy, striped towel on the lounge chair near the diving board. He made his way over to the large steps in the shallow end. He lowered his shorts and boxers, putting them in a pile on the pool’s ledge. The warm water covered him slowly as he made his way into the black-dark pool. Gerard quickly ducked underneath the water, wetting his hair completely. He surfaced and slung his hair about wildly, loosening it from his head. He waited patiently.

Frank quietly made his way through the kitchen. He turned the knob slowly, trying to make as little sound as possible. He slipped outside and gently shut the door behind him. Frank was in a full out run to get to the pool. His eyes, adjusting to the darkness, scanned the area. He could see nothing; it was completely pitch black in the pool. He followed the shadows on the ground until he could hear Gerard rustling the water as he swam.

“Where are you?” Frank whispered loudly.

“Right here,” Gerard whispered loudly in return.

“Oh well, that tells me so much,” Frank said, his voice whole, but low.

Gerard giggled.

Frank ripped his clothes off throwing them in all directions. His eyes were adjusting to their surroundings and he could see the outline of Gerard as he floated about. He quickly bound down the stairs into the warm water, grinning as if everyone was looking at him. It was dangerous to be doing this with everyone still in the house and the older kids probably still awake, but that was what made it so much fun. Frank loved adventure and after playing earlier, he was about to blow a load in his pants.

Frank swam out towards Gerard.

“Come here, quit swimming away from me asshole,” Frank said, dog paddling around.

Frank was no swimmer, but he got where he was going. He leaped off the slope from the shallow end, propelling himself towards Gerard. Gerard went under and Frank followed. Frank moved forward brushing Gerard with his hand. Still under water, Gerard pulled Frank too him and wrapped his arms around him. They came up from the depths catching their breaths, slowly. The moon light caused Frank’s features to glisten. Gerard held Frank with one arm and slipped his other hand into the man’s wet hair. He gently guided Frank’s face closer to his. Gerard licked a drop of water about to drip from Frank’s nose, and quickly pressed their lips together. Frank wrapped his legs around Gerard’s waist causing them to bob slightly below the water. Gerard pulled away from Frank’s mouth as he kicked them back upwards.

“Do you know how hard it is to keep both of us from going under?” Gerard asked smiling as he tried to tread water to stay afloat.

“If we are going to do it, we have to go back over there,” Gerard nodded towards the shallow end.

Frank giggled letting go of Gerard and swimming for the shallow end. Gerard kicked towards him. He found his footing and walked the remainder of the way to Frank. Frank bobbed up and down in the warm water. Gerard wrapped an arm around the smaller man’s waist pulling him close. He held onto Frank pushing him towards the wide steps at the entrance of the pool.

Gerard let go of him. Frank rested his elbows against the step behind him. Gerard slid up Frank’s front, resting their bodies together as he met the other’s mouth. Gerard was gentle in his touch causing a moan to escape Frank’s throat. Gerard’s groin reacted to the moan, getting ever harder. He pressed into Frank, floating back up slightly as his tongue explored the other’s mouth. Frank panted hard, trying to keep his position on the steps.

Gerard grabbed hold of Frank’s hips pushing him away.

“What… What are you doing?” Frank asked trying to pull Gerard back near him.

Gerard flipped him over. Frank braced himself with his palms on the step in front of him.

“It’s your turn tonight,” Gerard said in a hoarse voice.

“I thought we weren’t going to be able to do this for a while,” Frank said over his shoulder.

“Shut up,” Gerard said pushing Frank forward more.

He wasted no time preparing the other man. Gerard lined himself up with Frank’s entrance beneath the water and gently slipped himself inside.

“Ah shit!” Frank hissed.

“Shhh, someone will hear you,” Gerard whispered as he put both his hands on each of Frank’s hips.

Frank bit his lip as he grimaced in pain. Gerard rocked his own hips forward and back, allowing Frank to adjust to his girth.

“Your ass is so fucking tight,” Gerard said throwing his head back.

His hair soaking wet caused beads of water to trickle down his chest with each movement.

“Shut the hell up and fuck me,” Frank giggled.

Gerard raised an eyebrow, but said nothing. Frank would eat those words. Gerard tightened his grip on Frank’s hips and started to slam himself into him harder and harder. Frank grunted with every forceful thrust. Gerard bent forward over Frank’s back and slid an arm around him. He took hold of Frank’s raging hard on and began to pump him in time with his thrusts.

“Oh hell yes,” Frank breathed in response to Gerard’s touch.

“Shit, I’m gonna go. I can’t hold it anymore. God, I am so fucking horny,” Frank said squeezing his eyes shut as Gerard continued his rhythmic strokes inside him.

“Cum for me baby,” Gerard instructed.

He didn’t have to tell Frank twice. The man shot his load all over the step in front of him. Gerard let go of Frank’s pulsing dick, grabbing his sides again. He slammed into him two more times before spilling into him.

“I wanted you so fucking bad after singing in the garage,” Gerard panted into the air with his eyes closed.

“Mmmm,” was the only sound Frank could muster, still hunched over the pool’s entrance.

The two men gathered their clothes giggling arm in arm, with their towels wrapped around their waists. They made their way to the house.

“Who is that?” Gerard asked stopping and staring through the large windows that looked into the dinning room, and through to the living room.

He noticed two bodies intertwined above the sofa. He squinted unable to make out exactly who they were or what they were doing.

Frank craned his neck to see what Gerard was talking about.

“I don’t know,” Frank said, as he squinted his own eyes to help him see.

“Hey, is that not Anna?” Frank asked after staring for a minute.

“Yeah I think it is,” Gerard repeated, moving further down the patio to get a better view.

“Who the hell is she kissing?” Gerard asked, still unable to make out the other person.

Since when did Anna kiss boys?

Chapter 6

“This is total fucking bullshit!” Anna yelled.

Her words startled everyone. James, Seth and Michael were in the middle of an in-depth discussion on the band that was My Chemical Romance; their favorite songs and such. Anna’s outburst completely interrupted it.

“What’s up your butt now?” James blinked, confused.

“Do you know how hard it is to switch between guitar parts? It is near fucking impossible,” Anna said, sitting on the rug she had brought from her bedroom, a pretty little pink shag number.

She had tons of sheet music spread out in front of her, the guitar resting in her lap. She was doing her best to make something out of the two parts.

“This is completely useless. There is no way I can combine both parts to ‘Honey’. There is absolutely no way.” She surveyed the papers in both hands.

“How ‘bout I play my part and you play Ray’s?” Frank said, walking into the garage, grinning from ear to ear and carrying his guitar named “Pansy”.

“You think you can play Ray’s part? I would, but, well, I barely remember my own,” Frank said, squatting down near her.

“Oh, shit. Ummm, we didn’t mean to have the microphones and stuff out here this long. I meant to put them back in the studio before you all got back. I’m really sorry,” Anna apologized profusely.

“What-the Hell-ever. I will buy fucking new ones. You can have the mother fuckers if this means you are going to be in here doing this all the time!” Frank said, grabbing her head and squishing it to his chest tightly.

He was clearly more excited than they were. Anna pried her head away from him and quickly smoothed her ruffled hair down again. Frank jumped to his feet. He couldn’t stop smiling.

“Let’s play, I’m dying!” Frank yelped, causing Michael to jump a bit.

Michael hadn’t been around Frank all that much and didn’t realize how crazy he could get. Frank had quickly turned from a forty-two-year-old man into a 17-year-old kid. He was giggling, hopping and skipping around. He would sling his guitar around his body when just standing there.

His energy was contagious.

James began to hop around, not even realizing he was doing it. Anna stood up, leaving most of the papers on the floor. She was nervous as Hell. Not only was Michael there now, her dad was too!

“Okay, okay. Let’s do this before I back out,” Anna said, taking a deep breath and then letting it out.

Seth propped his tabs on the stand in front of him. James all but threw himself over the drums onto his stool. Frank plugged into the amp by Anna. He was trying to calm his exploding heart and mind. It was all the little man could do.

“Okay, guys, I don’t know this one really,” Michael said, looking at the lyrics on the sheet of paper printed off from the Internet.

“Oh, dude, okay. It's not that hard. Um… it goes like this… 'The amount of pills I’m taking, counteracts the booze I’m drinking.'” Frank screamed, trying to simulate Gerard singing the song.

“Oh! Okay. We might have to start over like 50 times, but I will give it a shot,” Michael said, quietly singing the lyrics in the style that Frank had demonstrated.

“How did you know we were out here?” Anna asked, wondering how he had gotten his guitar and just shown up out of thin air.

“Oh, we heard you guys doing 'Prison' from the driveway. We all stood at the door and listened. And, let me just say, we were highly impressed!” Frank said, almost out of breath from his continuing adrenaline rush.

The four of them smiled and blushed.

“Okay, now onto the song. Go, Anna, it's all you at the beginning,” Frank said, nodding at her.

She began Ray’s classic intro. Michael listened as he watched Frank start his part, thrashing about insanely. James beat the drums so hard it should have busted the heads of them. He was so amped up, he couldn’t take it. Frank hadn’t felt this release in forever. It felt so good. It was almost better than sex.

Frank stopped as he scraped his pick down the neck of the guitar, causing that all-familiar squeal. Anna smiled wide. It was fucking awesome. It was all there. All the parts fit perfectly. They had never played the song, but you would never know it. Their skill on their instruments was clearly evident.

Frank yelled, “NOW,” causing Michael to belt the opening lyrics.

“Fuck, yes!” Seth wailed loudly, not caring that an adult was in the room.

Frank couldn't have given a shit. Michael was unsure in some of the rhythms, so Frank stepped up to the mic, singing along with him. After a few lines, he let Michael take over again. They finished the song without crashing and burning.

“Oh, my God! That was friggin’ awesome!” James said.

“I am totally not singing that right,” Michael said, humming the song's rhythm to himself.

Anna just swayed, blushing furiously.

“I will sing it once for you if you want,” Gerard said, smiling.

“Uncle Gee! Yes, by all means. I am slaughtering it.” Michael stepped away from the mic and took a seat across the room again.

“Why have we not done this before now?” Gerard asked.

“I’ve been trying to get all you fuckers to do this for months! So, don’t give me that shit,” Frank scoffed.

Gerard winked at him. Frank licked his lips. Nothing made him hornier than to play while Gerard sang.

“Again, again, again!” James chanted, bouncing up and down again.

“You ready, sweets?” Gerard asked, looking at Anna.

She started the notes once again. Frank came in, along with James and Seth. Michael didn’t take his eyes off Gerard. He watched his every move.

Gerard twisted the mic out of the stand and gathered up the cord. He closed his eyes and threw his head back and forth, to the sound of the music. It was like riding a bike. He could never forget. He opened his mouth and the words poured out. Gerard hadn’t even warmed up, but it didn’t matter. The breathy voice was as good as it ever was, if not better. Frank stood in one spot, panting, his eyes fixed on Gerard. He inched near him, not missing a lick on his guitar. Frank licked his lips again. He was dangerously close to the other man. His crotch throbbed; it was clearly visible beneath his tight jeans. Frank wanted to touch him. He had completely forgotten where he was and who was in the room.

Gerard put the microphone back into its stand. He held onto it for dear life, screaming the lyrics. Michael’s eyes darted from each man to the other and back, wondering what the hell was going to happen. Frank moved around to the back of Gerard, as the man continued to sing. He raised himself up on his tiptoes, still playing. He leaned towards Gerard’s neck. Frank closed his eyes and licked all the way from the bottom of Gerard’s ear to the top. Gerard’s voice purred into the microphone as he shut his eyes. Frank stepped away from him. Gerard leaned back, thinking he was still near him. When he felt nothing, he ripped the mic from the stand and whirled around.

He grabbed Frank’s hair, taking a giant wad into his hand and squeezing hard. Frank’s eyes rolled back as Gerard brought his face close to his and screamed into his mouth. All eyes in the room were on them, but the two men were so caught up that they didn’t even notice. Gerard slammed their bodies together, causing Frank to miss several cords and basically lose his place in the song all together. The rest of them continued to play, watching what was going on in front of them. They had never witnessed such an encounter. Gerard backed away a bit and Frank started to play again. He let go of Frank’s hair and squatted all the way down in front of him. He heaved as he sang; his dick hard as a rock in his pants. Gerard slid his hand up the inside of Frank’s leg. Frank didn’t move; he would let Gerard do whatever he wanted. Gerard got closer to his crotch.

“DADDY!” Anna yelled as she stopped playing, her mouth hanging open.

It was as if someone had ripped the needle from a vinyl; everyone stopped. Gerard’s eyes flew open, as did Frank’s. Frank’s face was a thousand shades of red. Gerard stood up quickly.

“That was fucking awesome,” Seth said, nearly breathless from the display, playing and, well, everything that had just went on.

Gerard returned the mic to its place. He giggled nervously.

“Sorry, guys. Got a bit lost in the moment there,” he said, blushing slightly.

“Okay. I think we are going to leave you guys to it.” Frank felt completely retarded.

He couldn’t believe they had lost control like that in front of their own kids. He was mortified. No one replied. Even James had nothing to say. He just sat, staring at them. Frank put down his guitar. He and Gerard walked out of the garage. They made their way to the house. He grabbed Gerard’s hand, lacing their fingers together.

“That felt fucking awesome, didn’t it?” Frank asked.

Gerard grabbed him by his shirt’s collar and threw him against the side of the house. He slammed his mouth into Frank’s. He forced his tongue into the shorter man’s mouth without much effort, grinding into him as hard as he could. Gerard’s hands were everywhere. He wanted Frank so bad, but they couldn’t… There were people in the house, the garage, everywhere.

Frank pushed him away as he panted, “Wait, we can’t. The kids might see and they have been scarred enough for two days, I think.”

Gerard backed away, still pressing their bodies together.

“They just got their first taste of “Frerard,” is all. They will get used to it in time,” Gerard laughed, his smile brimming with evil.

Frank hadn’t seen him like this in years. He was back!

Chapter 5

She furiously strummed the strings in rhythmic succession. The excitement Anna felt when playing was incomparable. James came in, banging out the beat in perfect time. Seth thumped his bass with his eyes closed, trying hard to remember the simple note progression. Michael watched with his mouth hanging open. They were down a guitar, so sure, parts were missing, but they managed.

Suddenly, James stopped playing as he yelled, “No, no, no!”

They all stopped and stared at him.

“Why aren’t you singing?” James asked, looking at Anna.

She rolled her eyes. She toed the cord that hung down from her guitar.

“Because I don’t want to. I only do that when we're goofing. I can't really sing,” Anna said, slightly embarrassed.

“Yeah, but what? We're just gonna play the same riffs over and over? That’s gonna be gay,” James said as he crossed the drums sticks under his armpits and pouted.

“Don't make me punch you,” Anna seethed between clenched teeth.

“It doesn't matter if you can't sing. I don't care. If you aren't singing on my account, then well… just pretend like I'm not here,” Michael offered.

Anna bounced her leg against the back of the guitar, chewing on the tip of her pick.

“Or if I make you nervous, just pretend I'm naked,” Michael told her as he slapped his leg and laughed.

That statement didn’t help the matter in the slightest. Seth eyed Michael oddly and looked at Anna, watching the color rise in her cheeks.

“Babe, it's okay. Just belt it out like you always do,” Seth tried to assure her.

They started over. The time came for her to open her mouth and sing. She played the final bit of the intro and squeezed her eyes shut.

“Well, if you wanted honesty, that’s all you had to say…”

She screeched the lyrics causing James, Seth and Michael to all wince in pain. They straightened their faces quickly before she could see. It was normally bad, but not this bad.

Anna flubbed the next line by clearing her throat instead of singing. They continued to play. She tried again.

“For all the dirty looks, the photographs your boyfriend took…”

She squeaked and sputtered the lyrics yet again, producing a snarled lip from James. They continued to play with no words coming from Anna. Michael got up from his seat and walked towards the girl. Everyone watched, especially Seth. Michael took the microphone stand and slid it away from her. No one stopped playing. They all stared like robots watching Michael’s movements. He twisted the mic around to face him. He stood there for a moment, listening to the music. All eyes were on him as he faced them with his mouth near the mic.

He opened his mouth and the words began to roll out like bubbling water that had been waiting to escape the constraints of the rocks, and boy, did it flow.

“What will it take to show you that it’s not the life it seems?

I’ve told you time and time again, you sing the words but don’t know what it means…”

The other three played like zombies. They stared in awe at the voice that billowed from the boy’s lungs. It was as if he had summoned Gerard’s voice from the man’s own chest.

“To be a joke and look, another line without a hook,

I held you close as we both shook for the last time, take a good hard look…”

All three instruments silenced in unison, leaving Michael howling the last bit of words with his eyes closed. He stopped, opening his eyes and looking at the others. They all blinked at him wide-eyed.

“Fucking Hell, dude!” James said, with the biggest grin he could muster.

“Okay, this is crazy! You look like my fucking daddy, you sing like my daddy… Are you, in fact, my brother instead of my cousin? Did the people at the hospital mix you and nut over there up?” Anna asked with her hands on her hips.

“Sweet! You sound almost as good as the real dude!” Seth cheered loudly, punching Michael in the arm.

Michael laughed. “That’s nice of you to say, but I’m no singer. And no, Anna, I am not your brother.”

“Like, do you know any other songs of theirs?” James was hopping up and down with pure excitement over the matter.

He banged out the beginning of some random song.

“We have to play this again. All the way through this time, with you singing,” James spit all over the drums in excitement.

“Oh, no, no. This is all you guys. I was just helping Anna out. She seemed to be having a hard time,” Michael said, patting her on the shoulder.

“Like fucking Hell I’m ever gonna sing again. You are the official singer now, not me,” Anna instructed.

“Oh, no.” Michael shook his head as he took his seat again.

“Dude, you can't just totally nail a song that none of us can remotely sing and then say you won’t sing with us,” Seth shot, with a pissed tone.

“Okay, fine, but I don’t normally sing. I just like the old stuff. I really liked that CD,” Michael informed them.

“That’s all well and good. Now get up here and sing before I put your nuts in a vice grip,” Anna said, raising an eyebrow.

Michael looked at her funny, deciding she probably wasn’t kidding, and stood back up. He took his place behind the microphone once again. It was still turned facing them. James bounced up and down on his padded stool.

“Go, Anna. He’s ready,” James chirped.

Anna started, unable to hide her excitement as she smiled widely. The notes were played as they had been several times before. She came to the end of the intro and closed her eyes. Anna kept playing as she listened to Michael belt out the words, never once missing a note. She had no idea he could carry a tune in a bucket, much less be a vocal genius.

He has to have taken voice before, she thought, listening to the grit that he spit out with some of the words.

It was so raw and … and real. Anna couldn’t believe he wasn’t into music with a voice like that. She so wished they had that second guitar. It would be perfect if it weren’t for that. The song ended and James screamed like a girl, scaring her half to death.

“James, what the fuck?” She spat loudly.

“Nothing. I am just fucking stoked that he can sing and that he will sing with us!” He yelled, his voice breaking slightly.

“What other songs can you guys play from the 'Revenge' album?” Michael twisted the mic around playfully.

“Ummm, we can do 'Helena', 'It’s Not a Fashion Statement', 'Ghost of You', and 'Prison'.” James said, beating his sticks together anxiously.

“Calm the fuck down. We have all afternoon,” Seth said, growing weary of James’ hyperactivity.

“Oh, go to Hell. I'm just excited.” James threw a slightly girlish hand into the air as he rolled his eyes.

Seth rolled his in return. Seth was, if she had one, Anna’s boyfriend. He was also James’ friend. James had come to know him in band. Seth played the drums, as well. He was one of the quad players during marching season and hit the bells during concert season. The boy was not bad to look at either. Seth was a man of many talents. He was a mean bass player and was pretty good with a guitar, too. His naturally black hair was so dark it had a blue hue to it in the light. It was long in the front and short up the back. The fringe hung in his eyes. Eyes that were so light blue they were almost clear as glass. It should have been illegal to have the kind of perfect skin he had; very smooth, very pale. Most teenage boys his age were covered from head to toe in pimples, but not Seth. He was almost flawless, down to pearly white, straight teeth between his plump, pink lips.

Only one tiny problem with old Seth, he was jealous. Yes, it didn’t matter if the person was his girlfriend or friend. He had to be their number one and no one else. He required their undivided attention.

They played through “Helena” twice, followed by a few others. It had been a while since Michael had heard these songs, so he was a bit rusty on the words. The words he did get right, though, sounded like sliding around on satin sheets felt. It was, in a word, heavenly to hear him sing.

“Okay, we saved the one you really know for last. I’m ready to rock this fucker!” James screeched, bashing his toms and cymbal with his sticks.

Anna began to pluck the notes and repeated them. She watched as Michael listened to them over and over. It was a much longer intro than normal.

Anna raised her voice over the guitar she was playing. “I will nod you in.”

She realized he wasn’t sure where to come in. He watched her intently. Anna gave him the nod.

“In the middle of a gun fight…”

His voice quivered, sending shivers up Anna’s spine.

“In the center of a restaurant,

They say, come with your arms raised high!”

He continued to sing like he had been singing the song all his life. And, well, he probably had.

Outside, Gerard, Frank, Mikey, Alicia and Jeremy all piled out of their vehicle, having looked at 4 different houses.

“Do you hear something?” Frank asked Gerard, trying to figure out what he was hearing.

“Sounds like drums,” Mikey said, looking around.

Gerard pointed towards the end of the house. “It’s coming from the garage.”

Frank’s eyes flew wide open.

“They are fucking playing!” He shouted, jumping up and down just like James did.

“Frank! Jeremy is right here. Don’t talk like that in front of him,” Gerard scolded as he frowned.

Frank completely ignored him. He took off running, leaving the rest of them standing by the car. He ran as fast as his short self would carry him. His sneakers squeaked on the cobblestone as he slid to a stop by the garage’s side door. It was the kids. He peeked inside, and then quickly ducked back out of sight. He didn’t want them to stop. Frank couldn’t believe his ears. Not only were his kids playing one of their songs, but Mikey’s kid was singing, and he was damn good, too.

Frank hauled off, running again.

“Oh, my God, you guys!” He yelled, coming close to the others again.

“Come, come! You are never going to believe this!” He exclaimed, hopping like a rabbit in heat.

Frank struck a trot, as did Mikey. They came to the door again.

“Okay, from what I could tell… Michael is singing, James is on the drums, seems Anna is switching between guitar parts, and Seth is on bass,” Frank explained near Mikey’s ear.

“I knew Michael could sing okay, but I never realized how much he sounded like Gerard!” Mikey said, stretching his eyes wide.

Chapter 4

Mikey closed the back hatch on their rented sport utility vehicle. He once would have hated such vehicles, but now he had completely realized the need for them with two kids and their stuff. Michael got out of the vehicle as he adjusted his cap. He hated traveling and he wasn’t really keen on moving to a place where he knew no one but two slightly off kilter cousins. The boy walked around to help his dad with their bags, taking two and putting them on his shoulders.

“Thanks, man,” Mikey said, appreciating the help.

“Yep,” he stated, walking towards the front porch.

The front door flew open and Gerard wasted no time before he bounded down the brick steps.

“Mikey!” he shrieked, as if he was 8 years old again.

He jogged down to the, still skinny, man and threw his arms around his brother. Gerard was a bit weird, according to Michael. He wasn’t your normal guy and, besides that, he was married to a guy. Michael still hadn’t gotten used to that fact. He wasn’t ugly about it, just didn’t understand it.

Gerard and Mikey let go of each other. Frank, Anna and James made their way outside to greet them. Anna stayed perched beside the doorway nonchalantly. James ran down the small sidewalk scooping up Jeremy.

“Hey, little dweeb!” James said, scrubbing the small boy’s head.

Alicia and Mikey had thought they would only have Michael. Alicia’s pregnancy had not gone that great and caused major problems with her kidneys. She wasn’t the epitome of health by any means, so the doctors had advised her against having any more children. They had decided that was best, but fate stepped in, as it tends to do, and Jeremy was born. She had handled his pregnancy fairly well, but her kidneys lacked a bit of luster now, causing her to be sick often. Jeremy was four and clearly a joy to have around. He loved James more than any of the others. They were buddies.

Frank walked out to help with their luggage. Anna never moved from her cool pose by the entrance. It had been a little over a year since she had seen her cousins. She had gone to visit her mother’s parents over Christmas holidays, so she hadn't had a chance to see them while they were in town.

Anna watched as Michael approached her, smiling. She was flabbergasted by how much he had changed. His hair was the darkest of browns. The preppy fringe hung slightly in his eyes below the brim of his cap; the back jutted out, messy. As he got closer, it was almost like she was looking at her father. He looked very much like Gerard’s younger pictures. One particular picture she had seen stuck out in her mind. It was her daddy in a baseball uniform, face painted yellow, wearing a baseball cap. That was Michael minus the makeup. She had to wonder if anyone besides her noticed the similarities.

He stopped in front of her. It was like she had gone back in time seeing her dad when he was 28.

“What’s up?” Michael asked, stopping in front of her.

“Uh… nothing,” she sort of stuttered.

Shit. Now he thinks I’m just another dumb girl, Anna thought to herself.

“Dude, do you realize how much you look like my dad?” She didn’t hesitate to inform him.

He had completely grown up since the last time she had seen him… and in a very, very freakish way, he was cute; if, of course, you took off the Abercrombie shirt and Hollister jeans. She gagged a bit for thinking such things about her cousin, who looked like her dad. Michael looked at her like she was the definition of insanity.

“Oh, fine. I’m good. Things are going great. Thanks for asking,” he replied, smiling before walking past her into the house.

The freaking teeth… they were almost identical to Gerard’s.

Is this even possible? She wondered to herself.

Alicia walked up and pulled Anna into a hug, whether she wanted it or not. Anna returned the embrace, gracing her aunt with a small smile.

“Hey, sweetie. How ya been?” Alicia asked caringly.

“I'm good, and you?” Anna asked cordially.

“Oh, sweetie, we are fine,” Alicia said, squeezing the girl tighter, then letting go.

Anna watched as the others came toward the house. She poked Jeremy in the side as James carried him in the house, thrown over his shoulder. The little boy giggled loudly. Frank rolled past her into the house as she bit her fingernails.

“Anna-banana!” Mikey yelled from the sidewalk.

The name made her die a little inside every time someone said it. It was, after all, Mikey’s fault. He is the one who started the horrible word. She stuck her tongue out as far as it would go, acting as if she were vomiting.

Mikey chuckled. “Still a hard ass?” He asked.

“She tries to be,” Gerard said, following his younger brother with more luggage.

Anna just rolled her eyes.

Frank, Gerard and Mikey took the bags and various pieces of luggage to the guest room upstairs. Michael would bunk with James.

“So, like, what are you into doing this afternoon?” Anna asked the slightly fit boy as she watched him try to push his fringe out of his eyes.

She sat down on a chair near him at the table. James came running through, making the sounds of an airplane with Jeremy hoisted into the air. Anna looked at him, and then turned her attention back to Michael.

“Meh, whatever,” he answered, shrugging.

“Well, your parents and our dads are going house shopping, so I guess we're stuck here,” Anna said, pursing her lips together and looking around the room.

She was trying to come up with something for them to do. She didn’t like just sitting around. It drove her nuts.

“It's warm out. Could we go for a swim?” Michael asked, taking off his cap and slinging his brown hair loose.

“You have hat hair,” Anna thought aloud.

He just smiled.

“I guess we could, but I’m really not that into getting my hair wet. I just straightened the shit and it takes forever,” Anna said, twirling her pigtail.

“I need a cigarette.” She was random, to say the least.

“Hell yes!” Michael said, shoving back in his chair.

“You puff the sticks too?” Anna asked. He had definitely changed.

“Yeah, on occasion,” he told her. “Not when I’m playing but when it’s off season and I'm bored, yep.”

Mikey and Gerard came blundering down the stairs. Gerard kicked Mikey in the butt as he started off the last step.

“Hey, what was that for?” Mikey yelped, smiling. Some things never change.

Gerard giggled.

“Okay, kiddos, we are leaving you money to order pizza for lunch. We are going to head out and look at houses and we’ll be back later this evening,” Frank instructed, pulling three $20 dollar bills from his wallet.

Gerard stood by Mikey. He thumped him on the head.

“Stop,” Mikey whined.

James tossed the small boy toward Gerard. Gerard grabbed him, tickling him mercilessly and then letting him down.

“I like these people,” Jeremy said, climbing up his father’s legs, trying to get into his arms.

“Well, good. I’m glad you do because you're going to be around them lots now,” Mikey said, picking up the boy.

“Alright. Like I said, whenever you get hungry just order pizza. Be sure to tip the delivery boy… and… I expect my change when I get home,” Frank said, raising an eyebrow.

Anna plucked the money off the table and shoved it into her pocket, grinning.

“I mean it!” Frank said frowning.

“Yeah, yeah,” Anna said, grinning at him.

“Okay, we need to go. We have an appointment with the Realtor at 1:30,” Gerard informed them, looking at his watch.

With that, they said their goodbyes, gave the kids a few more instructions, and left, carrying Jeremy with them.

“Okay, so my stomach has eaten itself and is working on my liver,” James said with his hands on his hips, pursing his lips together. “Let’s order the pizza.”

“What kind you guys want? I'll order it,” Anna said, walking over to the counter and picking up the cordless phone.

“I will take cheese or pepperoni, either one,” Michael offered.

“Oh, good, good. I like cheese, too,” James said, doing a little dance number with his feet. He couldn’t be still.

“Well, how 'bout this… we get three mediums: a cheese, a pepperoni and a supreme,” Anna suggested.

“Eww, blech!” James spit.

“Oh, shut the fuck up. I didn’t say you had to eat it, but if you keep on doing that, I will lay on you and force it down your throat.” She glared at James.

He only stuck his tongue out at her in response.

“HEY, HEY, HEY!” James started yelling.

“What?” Anna asked, semi-annoyed.

“Seth is coming over and bringing his bass! We should set everything up in the garage while the dads are gone and show Michael the stuff we’ve been working on!” James said, jumping up and down.

“Oh, that would be awesome. I would love to hear you guys play,” Michael said, turning his attention from James to Anna.

She blushed, hanging up, having already ordered their pizza.

“I don’t know,” she said, looking at the ground, biting the inside of her jaw.

“Ahhhhh! COME ON!” James yelped at her.

She just stared at him.

“I mean, it’s perfect. We can set up my drums in there, the amps, all that good stuff. We gonna GET IT ON!” James said, running out of the room.

“I don’t know, I said!” Anna yelled at him as he made his way up the stairs, totally ignoring her.

She looked back at Michael.

“I'm sorry. You do not have to do this. I know that's not your thing,” she appologized.

“Pshh, I’m game. I want to hear it. What songs do you guys play?” Michael asked, putting his cap back on.

“It's nothing major, just some of the dads’ stuff. We dug out all of Dad’s sheet music. James got on the net and printed out all of Uncle Bob and Uncle Mikey's tabs. So we have been doing some of their stuff,” Anna said, playing with the chipping black on her fingernails.

“Ah, sweet,” Michael said, nodding.

They both jumped when they heard a crash from upstairs.

“I’m okay, I’m okay, I’m fine!” James yelled from the upstairs hallway.

Anna shook her head. Michael laughed loudly.

“Is he always like this?” Michael asked.

Anna nodded her head, rolling her eyes. James blundered down the stairs, holding various parts of his drum kit.

“Hell yeah! Let's do this!” he said excitedly.

Gerard slipped through the bedroom door, closing it quickly and quietly behind him. He stood against it, smiling at Frank, who had made his nest on his side of the bed. He looked up from his magazine.

“What is your deal?” Frank asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Oh, nothing,” Gerard said, walking over to the huge four-post bed.

He slowly prowled his way up the mattress next to Frank, sticking his face right in front of his magazine. Gerard pouted his lips. Frank put the magazine on the night stand beside him and flipped off his lamp.

“Oh, nice. We gonna get frisky in the dark,” Gerard smiled. Frank’s silhouette was barely visible.

Frank giggled, jumping to his knees and throwing Gerard down onto his back. He hovered above him, trying to make out his features with his newly adjusted eyes.

“God, you are so fucking hot,” Frank said, slipping a hand up Gerard’s loose t-shirt.

They might be older but their libidos hadn’t aged a bit.

“Thank you, thank you very much,” Gerard said, bringing his knee up to meet Frank’s package gently.

“You know, we won’t be able to do this for a week or so with Mikey’s bunch here,” Gerard informed Frank as he lifted the man’s t-shirt up and off him.

Frank kneeled beside Gerard on the bed.

Out the door he went. The air was cool and crisp. He took a deep breath in, watching the smoke rise from the top of the light brown liquid. It was quiet, except for a few birds chirping. No traffic could be heard buzzing about this early on a Saturday. Gerard took a large drink of the cooling coffee, smacking his lips after he swallowed. He was happy. He was so happy he thought he might burst. He had it all- a family, a successful career in several areas, and Frank. He took a seat on the lounge chair near the side of the pool and enjoyed the lull of the birds, taking a much needed drag off his first morning cigarette.

Mikey had decided that after living 9 years in Ohio near Alicia’s family, it was time for him to come home. He, Alicia, Gerard and Frank were going to look at a few houses in the Saddle River area. Gerard was ecstatic. He missed his brother. They talked almost daily but it wasn’t the same. He couldn’t just take a train or car to go see him. He had to fly, and frankly, he wasn’t into jet setting around the skies anymore. They would go see them or vice versa once a year, not counting holidays, but he was ready for him to be a drive away.

Mikey craved the small town atmosphere they had in Ohio but wanted the big city merely steps away. Gerard had done all he could think of to convince Mikey to move to Saddle River. Their kids were older and didn’t know each other as well as the two brothers would like. Mikey’s were two totally different kids compared to Anna and James. Mikey’s oldest son, Michael, wasn’t into music that much. He was completely obsessed with baseball, the sport that all of America loved and his own father loathed. The only sport Mikey ever enjoyed was the occasional round of kick ball. Baseball required wit and skill in the athletic department, not something Mikey had. However, that didn’t stop the man from rooting for his son at every game. Rain, sleet, hail nor snow could keep him from a game if his son was playing. He clapped and grinned enthusiastically every time the boy got a hit or threw an out.

Gerard walked back inside to stirring sleepy heads. Anna milled around the kitchen with lopsided pigtails, speaking to no one. Everyone in the house knew to leave her alone at least until lunch. She was nothing to mess with early in the morning. James hopped around like a chicken. Nothing got him down. He was, in all senses and purposes, one word… bubbly. But even he didn’t dare touch “morning” Anna.

Frank sat hunched over a bowl of Fruit Loops, chomping quietly. James sat at the bar, spinning round and round on a stool. Anna had shot him look after look. He was pissing her off. She took her spoon that was meant for cereal and clocked him right in the head with it across the bar.

“Oww!” James howled.

Anna didn’t care if it hurt or not. It did as she intended, stopped the spinning. Anna’s tired eyes glared at him.

“Tell her to stop hitting me with stuff,” James said, rubbing his head where the spoon had tagged him.

“Anna,” Gerard said, walking over to the table and turning his attention to Frank.

“Well, I wouldn’t be so tired and ill if two people hadn’t been rattling the walls all night,” she spat hatefully.

Frank almost chocked on his cereal, dropping his spoon in the process. Gerard’s eyes stretched wide. James giggled. He knew what she meant.

“James stop aggravating your sister,” Gerard scolded the boy, hoping to make Anna happy and quiet about the matter.

Chapter 2

Gerard opened the double French doors, stepping onto the cobblestone patio. He could see glowing red embers at the end of a cigarette. He walked closer to her, watching the fire move from place to place in her fingers.

“You know, he would have a fit if he saw you out here doing this,” Gerard said, nearing his daughter.

She responded to him by simply blowing rings of smoke into the air as she shrugged.

“Why do you love to make Frank so crazy?" Gerard asked, sitting down next to her on the diving board. "You know he loves you and is only trying to look out for you.”

“I know. I’m sorry,” she said, accidentally flicking a few ashes into the pool.

“I know we are two to talk, but we really wish you wouldn’t smoke. It’s a terrible habit to start,” Gerard scolded gently.

Anna took a deep breath and sighed at the comment. After snuffing her cigarette out on the side of the diving board, she threw it into a distant shrub near the wooden privacy fence. Gerard watched as his daughter's hands moved to her shiny black hair, tightening her slightly drooping pigtails.

He draped an arm around her shoulders, squeezing her tightly.

“Why so gloomy Gus tonight?” Gerard asked, knowing something was up.

She was never this placid, especially when she was playing around with Frank.

“Daddy, really… gloomy Gus?” she said, looking at him as if he had sprouted another head.

“Oh, shut up. You know what I mean,” Gerard said, banging his shoulder with hers.

“Sorry. I'm just pissy, I guess. Friends getting on my nerves and all,” she explained, putting her pack of cigarettes back into her vintage Hello Kitty messenger bag.

Gerard watched her. It was all he could do not to rip them out of her hands and dunk them into the swimming pool. He knew this would be pointless, because, like him and Frank, she would just go out and buy another pack tomorrow morning.

“Well, I’m here if you want to talk about it,” he said, his hands gripping the rough diving board beneath him.

Gerard stood, ready to go back inside. He turned to Anna, who remained sitting.

“Please… from now on, when you get home, at least tell me you're here. I don't want any unnecessary missing person cases filed on you,” he said, smiling.

“Okay. Sorry,” she said, gazing up at the stars.

Gerard took a deep breath and started to make his way back into the house. He didn’t want Frank and Anna to have a strained relationship. It was hard enough as it was. Frank was just a tiny bit overprotective of her. He didn’t want her to be treated like all the girls he had went to high school with. Anna, on the other hand, didn’t give a shit. She simply lived her life like she wanted; others be damned.

She might be different, but she wasn’t an outcast. She was pretty. No, she was down right gorgeous. She had eyes that penetrated deep into the soul; that could make you weak in the knees with one look. This, in addition to her mother’s long black locks and porcelain skin, were a deadly combination. She could kick a guy’s ass with the bat of an eyelash. They all wanted her… the jocks, the nerds, the geeks, the freaks. Her reaction to the attention? “Fuck off,” she would say. She wanted no part of it. Her love was her music… her guitar. It was her prized possession. She sat in her room playing it endlessly. It was the main thing she and Frank had in common. They had spent hours together, him teaching her. Oh, but she didn’t need to be taught much. She grasped it quickly and ran with it. Her long, thin fingers worked like lightening striking the neck of the guitar as she changed chords, quickly and precisely.

Anna could make minced meat out of songs like “Free Bird” and “Enter Sandman”. It was nothing to her. She was embarrassed to show her talent to others; a timid feature that had once been her Dad’s. Frank had tried to prod her into starting a band. He wanted so badly for one of their kids to get one together, but James was too busy being in the marching and concert bands at school. Frank could just imagine the two of them on stage, their skin glistening in the glare of the lights, guitar pick in hand and drumsticks raised high in the air, ready to unleash their fury upon the waiting audience. Oh, the sweet release they would have. Every emotion pouring from their body like neither had ever known.

“Let them be” were the words Gerard used every time Frank mentioned the matter. “They will do what they want when the time is right.”

Frank wanted it to be time. It was an itch he couldn’t scratch, but he knew Gerard was right. He himself would never have done anything he was pushed to do. He couldn’t very well expect either of the kids to do it either.

Gerard walked back into the house, putting his shoes by the back door. He went into the large kitchen and removed a bottled water from the fridge. He proceeded to drink it until it was empty. Frank walked in upon hearing the noise. He let out a sigh, gaining Gerard’s attention.

“She was just fucking with me like you said, wasn’t she?” Frank asked, pursing his lips together.

Gerard smiled sympathetically.

“Yeah, she only does it because she knows it's going to get a rise out of you. If you didn’t get so worked up, she wouldn’t do it,” Gerard said, tossing the empty bottle into the recycling receptacle.

He moved around the small bar and island between himself and Frank.

“Yeah, I know. I can’t help it,” Frank said.

The conversation or any exchange of affection was cut short by Anna's entrance through the double doors.

“Hey,” Frank chirped, putting on a happy face.

Anna stopped and stood there, biting her lip, before hopping up behind Frank and wrapping her arms around him. She placed a big, sloppy, wet kiss on his cheek and bounced away to the stairs. Frank was blushing slightly, but grinned widely.

“See, I told you,” Gerard reminded him, smiling.

Anna entered her room, flipping on the light. The walls were psychedelic pink with ancient, black vinyl records hanging randomly all over. Ruined ones, of course; she would never think of destroying such a precious item otherwise. She threw her bag behind her two guitars in a corner of the room. Her first guitar had been a beginner’s special from a local music store. One she was given for her 10^th birthday from her dads. Then there was the one she loved more than life itself; a 1957, ocean turquoise, electric Fender Stratocaster, in all its glory. Her heart beat faster from simply looking at it.

Anna walked out of her adjoining bathroom a few minutes later, fully clad in her skull and crossbones pajamas. She had to strum it before she slept. She grabbed the guitar by the neck and picked it up gently. She sat down in a nearby chair and threw the strap over her head. Placing the guitar in her lap, she pulled the Frankenstein pick from the small frets at the top. Anna took a deep breath, letting it out as the pick plucked over each metal string. Muffled sounds came from the guitar that had been left unplugged. The vibrations still there as if she was playing it fully amplified.

James bounded into the room loudly.

“Ever heard of knocking, punk?” She scowled at him.

“Ah, but then I wouldn’t catch you doing naughty things,” he joked, laughing with an evil cackle.

“You are one sick fuck,” she said, shaking her head.

“Oh, come on now. You know I’m just joshin', Anna-banana,” James teased.

“Don’t fucking call me that!” She shot.

“Anna… Anna-banana… Anna-banana…” James sang loudly, sticking his tongue out at her.

“I told you to shut up. Now, you’re gonna get it,” Anna said, placing her guitar back on its stand.

She lunged directly into the skinny boy’s gut with her shoulder. She knocked him completely off his feet, both of them landing on the large black bean-bag on the floor. Anna proceeded to punch him as hard as she could in both sides with her fists. He aggravated the shit out of her on a regular basis, so she had no mercy for him when getting her revenge.

“Ah… gah… oh… stop!” James yelped between punches.

He fought her with all his might, but was no match for her stout frame on top of his. Her punches turned into tickling fingers. James hated to be tickled. Spit on him, fine, but don’t tickle him.

“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!” he screamed as the two of them tumbled off the bean-bag and onto the floor, causing a loud thud.

James continued to scream and Anna didn’t let up. She was determined to teach him a lesson for calling her “Anna-banana”.

“Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!” James repeated so loudly that his voice caused the mirrors in the room to shake.

“Daddy’s not gonna save you now,” Anna said through clenched teeth, tickling the boy’s ribs harder.

“Shit… DADDY! I’m… gonna fucking… pee on you… if you… don’t… DADDY… stop!” James stammered and yelled, fighting her for all he was worth.

They rolled and tumbled, banging into every piece of furniture within 3 feet. James managed to get her turned onto her back and perched himself on top of her. He grabbed her wrists, forcing them down to the ground on either side of her.

“Now who’s the boss sucker?” He laughed in triumph.

“Not for long,” Anna said, flipping the light weight off of her completely.

She lay across her brother's body, pinning him to the floor.

“Get off me, you asshole,” James said, struggling against her weight.

Anna laughed. The door opened.

“My God, what is all the fucking ruckus up here?” Gerard said, standing in the opened door with his arms crossed over his chest.

“Make her get off me!” James yelled, attempting to slither his way from under her dead weight.

Anna got off the boy.

“Mess with me again and I will tickle you until you do pee your pants,” she said, delivering a final punch to his gut.

James ran behind Gerard and peeped around him.

“If you would leave her the hell alone she wouldn’t beat the shit out of you all the time,” Gerard said, shoving James off his arm playfully.

"Your sister beating you to death again?” Frank asked, elbowing the boy that was clearly taller than him as he walked by.

“Ha-ha, very funny,” James said, narrowing his eyes at his dad.

Frank continued on his way to his and Gerard’s bedroom, giggling.

“Okay, you two need to get to bed. Your Uncle Mikey and the bunch are coming tomorrow. They will be here sometime around lunch. I want beds made and showers finished before 11:00,” Gerard instructed.

Chapter 1

“Where the fuck could she be?” Frank asked pacing from spot to spot in the large living room.

“Calm down she’s only like what… five minutes late?” Gerard said from behind his thin rimmed reading glasses.

Gerard continued to read as Frank continued to pace. His hair was a dark brown now, his natural color. Long gone were the days of jet black hair with wild streaks. The only streaks he was sporting these days were the traces of stray grays through out his medium colored mane.

“It’s not like James is home yet either.” Gerard said turning the page.

“Are you retarded? He has been home an hour. He’s in his room.” Frank spat with an idiotic look on his face and his hands on his hips.

“Oh, I never heard him come in.” Gerard said placing his marker between the pages he had been reading.

He laid the paper back book on the wooden side table near the couch placing his glasses on top of it. Frank dialed Anna’s cell number again. It rang and rang but no one answered.

“Fuck!” Frank exclaimed kicking the ottoman.

Gerard took a deep breath and sighed. “You got to calm down. You do this every time she’s the tiniest bit late.”

“Well I’m sorry she’s off with friends doing god knows what… stuff that she wont tell us. She could be getting raped and murdered right now, and you don’t care.” Frank huffed plopping down on the love seat across from Gerard.

“Frankie babe… this is Saddle River not Belleville. I mean hell she would come more getting told she had on the wrong color for the season here… than getting raped or murdered.” Gerard said standing to his feet.

When the kids were toddlers Frank and Gerard had decided Newark wasn’t the place to raise them. The crime rate was as high as ever and the schools lacked luster in the education department. They had done everything they said they wouldn’t. Each of them vowed never to live like the rich people. They didn’t want to be part of the elite but due to their status when the band took an indefinite hiatus; the four of them were forced into a secure gated community. Frank and Gerard stood out like sore thumbs.

It took Frank the longest to adjust. He wasn’t entirely happy when they decided on it. Gerard had wanted to move out of the state where no one would find them or be nosey. Frank on the other hand was devoted whole heartedly to his home state regardless the cost. So they had compromised and this was the result, a snotty upscale neighborhood living in a giant, two million dollar home.

Frank had adjusted to their life. They had been living in the house for around 11 years now and he had made it a home for them. He ran his Skeleton Crew business out of the pool house turned office. There were always random musicians streaming in and out of the property. Frank was friendly with the neighbors when they spoke but Gerard tended to keep to himself. His years of fame had proved to be enough attention for him and he was happy writing comics, children’s books and a column for a local artist’s magazine, away from prying eyes now. He was reaping the benefits of his, now retired, comic book series “The Umbrella Academy”. Hollywood had decided they wanted to shoot a trilogy of the series and he wasn’t going to be the one to stop them. It was an honor for him to have created something that so many loved, and loved enough to see it brought to life on the big screen. He would get to be the on-site consultant for all three movies, insuring everything stayed true to the series.

“Okay, I am going to check in on James. I will ask him if he has heard from her.” Gerard said walking out of the living room area towards the wide staircase in the foyer.

“Oh yeah good idea,” Frank said trying to type a sporadic text message on his, new and very difficult to work, cell phone.

“I swear to god I am going to throw this fucker into a wall.” Frank cursed punching buttons getting no where with the phone.

“Frank your temper…” Gerard yelled from the stairs still steadily climbing.

He made his way down the long hall to a door that had random stickers all over it. Some were band stickers, but most were ignorant bumper stickers with crazy sayings on them that James had collected while traveling from place to place with Frank and Gerard.

Gerard could hear the low hum of music through the door. He knocked only loud enough to be heard above it.

“Enter!” He heard a slightly cracked voice shout.

Gerard opened the door slowly, the music now fully audible.

James looked up from his drawing table and smiled.

“Word,” he said cocking his head back slightly then turning his attention back to the project in front of him.

He had the same mannerisms as Frank. The same look on his face. The same hair, lips, nose… almost everything. His eyes twinkled when he smiled, just like Frank’s did. It would cause Gerard to sigh every time he saw it.

Gerard stepped inside a little ways, causing James to look up at him again.

“What’s going on Daddy-o?” He asked in a chipper tone.

He also seemed to have Frank’s sunny disposition.

“Have you heard from Anna at all in the last hour?” Gerard asked leaning his side against the door.

“Umm not since about 8:00 actually, she was with some chick from school. She said something about going to a movie then coming home. They would drop her off by here.” James explained as he put his charcoal sticks back in his small pouch and shoved them into the drawer below the table.

“Is Dad freaking out again?” James asked with a chuckle.

“Oh yeah.” Gerard said nodding and smiling in return.

“You know she loves to do that to him. She’s probably outside smoking, sitting there just to mess with his head.” James said flipping his work light off, walking to his laptop to turn the volume down.

“I know she likes to mess with him but she’s gonna give him a fucking heart attack if she keeps this up.” Gerard said pulling the door open and sticking his head out into the hall.

“James said she was going to a movie, and then her friend was dropping her off here afterwards!” Gerard yelled, it echoed down the open hall into the foyer below.

“Well all the fucking movies were over an hour ago!” Frank screeched back up to him from below.

Gerard rolled his eyes stepping back into James’ bedroom.

“I’m about to go look for her little ass!” Frank bellowed from downstairs.

Gerard rolled his eyes.

“Just a second,” Gerard said leaving the bedroom again.

He stepped out of the room and down the hall. He leaned over the stair rail and yelled.

“Frankie Iero sit your ass down and take a deep breath. I am going to have James call her and see if he can get her to answer. She has to be missing for 24 hours before the cops will do anything anyway.” Gerard spouted loudly as he grinned to himself.

Anna was notorious for pushing Frank’s buttons. She was beautiful, popular, talented, and everyone liked her, but boy did she give Frank fits. Gerard understood her. Gerard related to her. He seemed to be more relaxed than ever in his old age. Gerard never could figure out exactly why she pushed Frank’s buttons so. You would have thought she was his biological daughter. She acted just like he did when he was younger. She had a pure punk rock heart under all those crazy clothes and all that make up. She had talent surpassing some of the greats when it came to guitar. She could give Ray a run for his money playing some of the band’s first songs he had written. This was no doubt a skill inherited from her mother. A mother she looked just like. The only thing different from her mother was the nose that flipped up in the air just like her father’s.

James stuck his head out of his bedroom.

“I told you she was probably outside.” He said with the phone to his ear.

“Is that her?” Gerard asked looking at him.

“She’s out back by the pool smoking, I told you didn’t I.” James nodded as he punched his phone off.

Gerard proceeded to haul ass down the stairs. Frank was putting on his worn out hoodie, ready to hit the streets searching for her lifeless body laying dead in a gutter.

“Whoa there big fella.” Gerard said seeing Frank ready to walk out the door.

He jogged to meet him.

“Take a chill pill she’s out back by the pool. She’s been back there for thirty minutes. She’s just fucking with ya.” Gerard said throwing an arm around Frank’s neck.

Frank let out a relieved breath.

“She makes me so nuts!” He said wiping the perspiration off his forehead. He started for the back of the house, heading outside.

Gerard jogged again catching up to him.

“I think you better let me talk to her.” Gerard said pulling the upset man into a hug.

“Well you tell her I’m pissed.” Frank said pouting slightly wrapping his arms around Gerard’s waist, clearly calmer than he was before.

“Alwight I will,” Gerard teased letting go of Frank goosing him in the side trying to make him giggle.

Chapter 40

It had been quite a roller coaster ride the last two months. Frank had driven himself nuts trying to find out if it was indeed Jamia who tipped off MTV news. He asked her once and she denied it, but all signs pointed to her. He finally just gave up. He had used every resource they had, and still was no closer to the truth.

Things had begun to settle down and they were working on their fourth album. Gerard had been “inspired by their love” as he liked to say. Frank was glad in a way it had all gotten out. He didn’t have to hide the fact that he was James’ father. The boy was the spitting image of him; hair, eyes, and all. It was a bitch to deal with the questions they had to answer, but all in all releasing a statement about the baby had been the best decision they could have ever made. There was the occasional comment that Gerard had to deal with, but being called a freak didn’t bother him one bit. He was caught up in being a loving dad to two beautiful little ones. None of the men could have predicted the level of famous they reached after the info got out. Fans rallied around Frank and Gerard for coming out with their relationship. They had received tons of gifts when word got out about the baby.

Frank clutched the small bag to his chest and exited the quaint little shop. He was on his way home, their home. Frank had moved all his things out of his old house permanently moving in with Gerard. He was as happy as a clam. He had it all, or at least it felt that way.

Gerard lay in the floor drawing brightly colored cartoon animals. He would lift one up and show the babies when he was finished then move on to the next one. James sat in his bouncy seat, sound asleep. Anna lay in the floor beside Gerard on her blanket holding her little stuffed bat. She cooed and kicked as Gerard talked to her while he drew.

Frank came in the door behind them.

“Hello,” he called loaded down with bags.

“Hey.” Gerard said hopping up from the floor to help him.

He walked over kissing Frank quickly on the lips taking some of the bags from him.

“Thanks so much for going to the grocery store for me, you are the best.” Gerard said walking to the kitchen.

“Ah that’s fine - I don’t mind.” Frank said sitting the bags on the coffee table.

He went straight for Anna, scooping her up into his arms and tickling her cheek with his nose. His six-day-old five o’clock shadow made her grin.

“You helping Daddy draw?” He asked her blowing his lips at her making her smile again.

“She was.” Gerard chirped, unloading the groceries in the kitchen.

“Oh fucking yes! You got me Starbucks coffee beans!” Gerard said pulling the white bag from the paper sack.

Frank smiled at him.

“Yeah you just wrote down coffee beans and I wasn’t completely sure which ones you wanted, so I figured I couldn’t go wrong with that.” Frank said returning Anna to her blanket in the floor.

“I love you to fucking death! You totally own my soul!” Gerard said almost hugging the bag of beans.

“I don’t know why you have to grind you own anyway. You are so weird.” Frank said smiling.

Gerard batted his eyes at him, sticking his tongue out. Frank walked into the kitchen. He grabbed Gerard by the arm and twirled him around to face him.

“Well hello there,” Gerard said in a sexy voice, striking the gayest of poses.

Gerard placed his hands on the counter behind him and hopped backwards onto it. He grabbed Frank by the t-shirt and pulled him in between his legs. Frank felt that old familiar feeling in his pants. Gerard flipped his shaggy hair out of his face. He slid his fingers up each side of Franks face, bringing their faces extremely close to one another. Gerard gently nudged Frank’s nose with his own.

“Ugh…” Frank moaned.

He rubbed his talented fingers up Gerard’s thighs leaving his thumbs in the creases of the man’s groin as he leaned in to kiss him. Gerard sucked Frank’s bottom lip into his mouth nibbling slightly with his teeth. Frank moaned again weakly. He pulled his lip from Gerard’s mouth and looked into his eyes. Gerard smiled slightly. He pulled Frank into a hug.

“Do you know how much I love you?” Gerard whispered into Frank’s ear.

Frank chuckled melting into Gerard’s arms,

“I love you too.” Frank sighed squeezing him back.

Whimpers softly rose from the bouncy seat.

“I’ll get him you can finish up the groceries.” Frank said pecking Gerard on the lips before letting go.

He walked over, unfastened James and plucked him from the bouncer. He sat down in the floor by Anna who was still wide awake and holding her little bat. She kicked her tiny pink socked feet seeing Frank. He put James beside her on the blanket popping his pacifier into his mouth. He lay there blinking at the lights, not sure what to make of his new spot in the floor.

Frank drew his knees up to his chest, talking to both of them for a moment.

“Hey Gee, I ordered food in for us tonight.” Frank called from the living room.

“Oh okay, what did you get?” Gerard asked as he finished grocery duty.

“Italian… I picked like five different entrées so you know out of all of that surely you will like something.” Frank explained looking up.

“Ah yeah you know me. I will eat whatever.” Gerard said grabbing the little bit of belly flab he had left over from James and shaking it.

He sat down by Frank and looked at their two children in the floor. Gerard poked Frank with an elbow. Frank elbowed him back. They smiled.

“I need to run do something right quick.” Frank said getting out of the floor.

Gerard’s smile quickly turned into a confused look.

“Are you leaving?” He asked wondering where Frank would need to go he had just come home.

“No, no… I have to do something back there.” Frank said nodding towards the hall.

Gerard was very suspicious. Frank was acting strange, but he couldn’t figure out why. He just shrugged and started playing with the babies.

Meanwhile Frank went into the room where Gerard kept all of his art supplies and he kept a couple of his guitars. He pulled the black case from the closet. This acoustic guitar was a gift from his Grandfather, and was very special to him. He only used it on special occasions. He opened the case. Inside it was the music he had been practicing when Gerard wasn’t around, which wasn’t often. Frank picked up the papers and drew in a shaky breath. He was becoming a jittering idiot as he sat there staring at the chords written in black.

“I’m ready… I can do this.” Frank tried to reassure himself.

“I play in front of thousands of people. I can play in front of three more.” He said to the guitar in front of him.

Frank picked the guitar up by its mahogany neck. He pulled one of his picks from a pocket in the case. He looked at it then stuffed it into his pocket. He grabbed the music and stood up. It was now or never. He checked his other pocket for the small black box. Frank took a deep breath and was ready.

He walked down the short hall and into the living room. Gerard remained in the floor playing with the babies. He looked up and smiled lovingly.

“Oh Daddy has his guitar!” Gerard told Anna and James with excitement in his voice, “Maybe he will sing us a song.”

Frank smiled back trying not to be nervous. He was doing a poor job. He sat the guitar in the chair beside him and walked over to Gerard. He leaned down and picked up James. Gerard watched inquisitively.

“Get Anna and sit on the couch please.” Frank told him flashing him a shaky smile.

“Okay…” Gerard said eyeing him.

Frank walked over to the couch and wedged James upright in the corner. Gerard watched still frowning.

“What are we doing?” Gerard asked sitting down in the middle of the couch.

“No, no scoot over this way.” Frank instructed motioning towards the end of the couch near the seat with the guitar.

Gerard stopped asking questions and did as he was told. He sat Anna on the couch near James and turned his attention back to Frank. He watched him patiently.

Frank turned around and picked up the guitar. He reached into one of his pockets on his cargo pants and pulled out something putting it into the chair. He reached into another pocket and got the pick out then arranged the sheet music on the coffee table in front of him. Gerard just watched. He sat down and put the guitar in his lap. His fingers found their places. Frank strummed once. He stopped and looked up at Gerard.

“I…I know you are the singer in the bunch and I completely realize I can’t sing. But if you would hang in here with me, I want to sing you a song.” Frank explained flicking the pick nervously.

Gerard smiled from ear to ear and nodded eagerly. Frank had never done anything like this before. Gerard clasped his hands together in his lap and waited.

Frank drew in a deep breath and blew it out and started to strum. Gerard was still smiling as big as his face would let him.

He began to sing…

Gerard cupped his hand over his mouth tears filling his eyes. Frank looked at the music on the table and kept singing…

By the time Frank finished the song Gerard was blubbering like a baby. He was sniffing and wiping huge tears that rolled down his cheeks. For the first time in his life he was speechless.

Frank put down the guitar and crawled over to Gerard on his knees. He took Gerard’s hands in his.

“I realize we live where we do. I know we can’t get married.” Frank paused taking a deep breath.

Gerard sniffed and sputtered trying to contain himself but failed miserably. He continued to sob, listening to his best friend speak.

“But I love you and even if we can’t get married… I want you to be my partner for life.” Frank let go of Gerard’s hands and dug into his left side pocket.

He pulled out the small black velvet box. His hands shook as he brought it up in front of Gerard. Frank clicked it opened and turned it around slowly revealing two satin finished platinum bands. Gerard wiped more tears. Frank reached in pulling the two bands out, one slightly larger sized than the other.

“I got them engraved.” Frank said putting the velvet box on the floor beside him holding the two rings between his fingers.

“Mine says Forever, yours says Loved.” Frank said taking Gerard’s left hand in his.

Frank slipped the larger of the two rings on Gerard’s left ring finger. He put the other one on his finger. He took Gerard’s hands in his once again. He raised up slightly coming face to face with Gerard.

“How did you know?” Gerard squeaked trying to talk.

“I found your old wedding band in your night stand drawer. I used it to figure out what size to get you.” Frank explained.

“That’s not all. I also have this for you.” Frank said turning back to the chair he had been sitting in.

He lifted up a small white leather box. It had a “W” embroidered in black on top of it. He handed it to Gerard who was still crying. Gerard took the box and lifted the top off. Inside were his and Lindsey’s wedding bands lying on black satin fabric.

“It’s a keepsake box I had made for you to keep them in. I thought maybe one day Anna might want to have them.” Frank said fighting tears of his own.

Gerard closed the lid to the box and set it gently on the coffee table. He pushed forward causing Frank to back up. Gerard dropped to his own knees in front of him. He crashed his lips into Frank’s, crying as they kissed. Gerard pulled away from his mouth and tucked his head into Frank’s tattooed neck. They hugged each other as tight as their arms would let them.

“I love you, I love you, I love you.” Gerard chanted sweetly into Frank’s ear. “You will have my heart forever.”

Chapter 39

Gerard was upset. He wasn’t in the mood to make pictures anymore. He walked back out into the living room all puffy eyed. Everyone stopped what they were doing. Bob hung up on whoever he was talking too. Mikey and Alicia stopped playing with James. Ray just sort of stared waiting to see what Gerard would say.

Gerard looked around from face to face. He took a deep breath.

“Put her in the cradle please.” He said handing Anna to Frank.

Frank took the little girl and laid her down in the small bed in the corner of the room, covering her with a polka dot blanket. Gerard stood lethargic and silent. Frank moved back over to him placing a hand on his back. The whole room watched him take the seat he had previously owned. No one knew what to say to him.

“Gee, I…” Mikey began speaking.

Gerard stuck up his hand and shook his head. Everyone glanced from one another back to Gerard. Mikey didn’t finish his sentence. Frank walked over gently taking James from Mikey.

“Thanks.” He mumbled.

He walked back over and sat down beside Gerard’s chair in the floor holding the baby. Gerard cleared his throat.

“I owe each and every one of you an apology.” He spoke his words choking down the lump in his throat that had returned.

“I had no idea anything like this would ever happen to me. I was stupid for thinking we could keep all this a secret.” Everyone looked away from him silently.

Frank toyed with the blanket wrapped around James. Ray sat with his legs crossed his arm propped on the back of the chair holding his forehead. Mikey held Alicia’s hand looking at everyone but Gerard. Bob sat bent over slightly his elbows resting on his knees, his hands clasp together under his chin.

“I am really sorry for everything I caused with all this. But…” Gerard said pausing.

He was very clear his next statement.

“I do not… I do not regret James being a part of my life, not even the tiniest bit.” There was a hint in his voice that he might lose his cool, a slight scowl on his face.

All eyes were on him. They recognized the familiar sound of anger forming in his voice. He had gone into protective daddy mode.

“I love him and he is my son and I am not ashamed of him.” Frank nodded in agreement with his statement.

“Do any of you have any idea who might have done this?” He took a deep breath in and let it out. He was trying not to get mad.

Bob shook his head. Mikey shrugged his shoulders. Ray shook his head. Gerard noticed Alicia wasn’t looking at him.

“And you?” He asked accusingly. Frank looked up to see who he was talking too. His eyes traced Gerard’s gaze to the couch.

Mikey looked at Gerard and then at Alicia. Alicia felt all the eyes on her and looked up.

“Well I might have an idea.” Alicia started afraid to look him in the eye.

Gerard formed fists for hands in his lap.

“Who?” Mikey said surprised she hadn’t said something earlier and wondering what the fuck she could possibly know.

She could feel the looks stabbing her like knives.

“Okay the other day. It was the day after Gerard had the baby. That afternoon I was at the Way’s and I ran to get something to eat for us all. While I was there Jamia came in. I spoke to her and asked her if she had seen the baby yet. She got kind of pissed that I had asked her.” Alicia said nervously fidgeting her hands.

Gerard and Frank both rolled their eyes huffing a bit.

“She said something that sort of made me wonder what the hell she was talking about.” Alicia continued feeling like a lamb about to be slaughtered.

“What did she say?” Frank said not at all amused that this was possibly Jamia’s fault.

“She said and I quote… those two better be careful or someone is going to pop their happy little bubble.” Alicia said.

“Why didn’t you tell us?” Mikey asked.

“Well I didn’t really think anything of it. I mean I didn’t realize you two were on the outs and she was pissed about it. No one told me. If I had known I would have never even asked her about it. I’m stupid like that sometimes.” Alicia said feeling guilty.

“It’s not your fault; she’s just being a bitch. If she did this, then it’s my fault for going off on her. I’m sure that helped nothing.” Frank said patting the sleeping boy’s bottom.

Gerard leaned back in the chair. No one said anything else. Everyone was silent.

“Dude I feel like I am about to get fired from the band.” Mikey said smiling his tiny fang like teeth hanging over his bottom lip.

Bob laughed shaking his head. The mood had lightened a little.

“Shut the hell up.” Gerard said rolling his eyes. He chunked the small pillow under his arm hitting Mikey square in the head.

“Yeah I’m waiting on one of you to stomp out mad.” Frank said giggling.

Gerard shook his head. He was dealing with retards. Ray jumped feeling his phone vibrate again. He looked at its screen.

“It’s Brian.” Ray announced.

Ray answered the call and listened. Ray started pointing like a mad man causing everyone to look at him strange. Bob looked past Gerard trying to see what he was pointing at. He turned back to him and shrugged his shoulders. No one had a clue what the hell was wrong with him.

“The… the…go to the computer!” Ray finally managed to spit out.

“Why?” Bob asked.

“There is more on the net apparently.” Bob jumped out of the chair and rushed to the laptop still open on the table.

Mikey leaped to his feet, “I gotta see this.”

“For the love of God what now?” Gerard whined closing his eyes not even wanting to know.

“Where do we go?” Bob said sitting, waiting for instructions.

Ray pushed Mikey over moving in between him and Bob.

“Go to www.gerardaholic.com and click news.” Ray said waiting patiently on what they were about to see.

“Damn it!” Bob exclaimed.

“What?” Gerard yelled from the chair.

“It says we have to create an account to use that feature. Ah hell fine, I will create an account on Gerardaholic. I can’t even believe that they have a site called that.” Bob said filling out the entry form.

“You’re just fucking jealous. You want to be me.” Gerard giggled slurring his speech a bit.

“Looks like your drugs are starting to kick in.” Frank smiled nodding to himself.

It was really a good thing. It might keep him calm. Bob just rolled his eyes.

“Frankie you know you love me under the influence.” Gerard chuckled.

“Oh hush, you nut.” Frank said punching the side of Gerard’s leg.

“Ouch you ass I just had your baby stop being mean to me.” Gerard giggled again.

“Oh well in that case let me kiss it and make it better.” He bent over and smacked Gerard on his wounded leg.

Alicia laughed and shook her head. Frank smiled at her.

“Fucking finally.” Mikey said pushing Bob forward with his fist for taking a life time to create his account.

Bob clicked on the news link on the site and waited. It slowly loaded into view.

“Uh oh, there is no denying it now.” Bob said looking at the screen.

“Yep we can safely say it’s out now.” Mikey said raising his eyebrows.

It was a picture of James’ listing in New Jersey’s vital records. It stated his name, birth date, place of birth and both parents’ names. It was there for the world to see.

“What is it exactly?” Frank asked.

Neither he nor Gerard had budged from their seats. Gerard was past the point of caring and Frank didn’t really give a shit what some gossip site all about Gerard, had to say.

“Well… it’s a picture of an entry in New Jersey’s vital records. It has James’ full name and you guys listed as his parents. It’s legit too, I have seen these before. It’s like what his birth certificate would say.” Bob explained.

“Oh hell...” Frank said thinking, “you listed me on the birth certificate?”

He poked Gerard in the arm causing his chin to slip off the heel of his hand.

“What?” Gerard said startled.

“Did… you… list… my name… on James’ birth certificate?” Frank asked him slowly like he was talking to a mentally challenged kid.

“Well duh… you are his dad.” Gerard said closing heavy eyelids again.

“Lovely.” It had little effect; nothing could surprise Frank anymore at this point

Frank got up out of the floor and took the baby into his room. He placed him in the crib and walked back out with the rest of the bunch.

“We’re not working out… you can’t keep my brother… you can’t fuck my Frank…” Gerard sang from his chair completely incoherent at this point. Alicia put her hand over her mouth trying not to laugh out loud.

Frank stopped at the computer looking over Bob’s shoulder.

“Can we tape his mouth shut?” Mikey asked smiling at Frank.

“Gotta love him.” Frank said rolling his eyes turning his attention to the computer.

“Well that’s a little weird, they have Gerard listed as the mother.” Bob said pointing to the title before his name.

“I’m his dad you idiot!” Gerard yelled.

“Yeah well this says you are his mother.” Bob said making Mikey giggle.

Frank punched Bob in the back “Shut the fuck up.”

“He has two daddies. You know that. I am a dude full on now. All my girl shit is gone now, woo whoo!” Gerard exclaimed raising triumphant fists into the air.

This made everyone in the room laugh.

“I’m going to be his Daddy Warbucks and Frankie is going to be Punjab… like that musical.” Gerard babbled with his eyes closed.

“SHHHHHH!” Frank commanded from the computer. “What should we do guys?” Frank asked.

“Did he just shush me?” Gerard said cracking an eye looking at Alicia.

“I think he did.” Alicia whispered smiling.

“You better recognize bitch!” Gerard said grabbing his crotch then wincing in pain.

“Ouch, shouldn’t have gone grabbing down there.” Gerard said having bumped his stitches.

“I think we should just tell Brian to release a statement to the press explaining things.” Bob said.

Ray nodded.

“Sure might as well now. If this site has this… its about to blow fucking wide open,” Frank said throwing his hands up in defeat.

“I don’t even give a shit anymore.” He decided.

He walked over to Gerard and stood in front of him. He bent down and smacked his forehead with his lips.

Gerard reached up and grabbed his crotch catching Frank off guard. He grabbed Gerard’s wrist.

“I wanna fucking piece of that right there.” Gerard slurred shaking Frank’s crotch roughly.

“I swear to god, you are the horniest high person I have ever met.” Frank said pulling Gerard’s hand off his crotch.

“Hehehehe!” Gerard giggled.

Chapter 38

Frank sat down on the couch to feed the baby. Ray was on the phone again. Bob was still at the laptop searching every fan site, news site and every other site that might have information on it about them.

“That’s right little man you just eat up and don’t worry about a thing.” Frank spoke softly as James blinked at him sucking away.

Frank cuddled him close and put his feet on the coffee table in front of him. Ray nearly pissed himself when he paced by the door as a loud knock hit it. He peeped out the blinds.

“Hey Mikey’s here, I gotta go. We will talk to you after we talk to him and Gerard.” Ray said ending his call with Brian.

Frank looked up. “Don’t just blurt it out to him, let him get inside first.”

Ray nodded and opened the door.

“Wow didn’t know there would be a house full.” Mikey said walking in carrying Anna in her little carrier. She was sound asleep yet again.

Alicia trailed in close behind them.

“This child sleeps more than any human possibly can.” Mikey said sitting her carrier on the coffee table beside Frank’s feet.

“How was she? Did she give anyone any trouble?” Frank asked still feeding his son.

“Nope, Mom said she was wonderful the whole time she had her, and she’s been just lovely today with us.” Mikey told Frank with a smile.

“She is so good. I hope we get that lucky.” Alicia said taking her bag over to the small bar in the kitchen.

She came back and got the baby out of the carrier and held her while she slept.

“Where’s Gerard?” Mikey noticed his absence.

“He’s sleeping. He had a pretty rough morning. He said he felt like his insides were gonna fall out, so we went by and got his pain meds filled.” Frank told him putting the little one on his shoulder to burp him.

“Eww, that doesn’t sound very fun.” Mikey said squishing up his nose.

“Why you guys so quiet?” Mikey asked looking at Ray then to Bob, “And since when do you surf the web?” He directed his question towards the kitchen table, grinning.

Bob just smiled and got up and walked over. He leaned down and handed Mikey the piece of paper that he had handed Frank earlier. “Ray found this on the net a little over an hour ago.”

Mikey unfolded the paper. “Shut up! No way! They know?”

Mikey’s mouth hung open.

“What?” Alicia said leaning over to see the piece of paper. Her eyes got big and she didn’t say anything.

“Gerard doesn’t know yet does he?” Mikey asked knowing if he did he would be hitting the roof instead of sleeping.

Frank just shook his head.

“Do you guys have any clue who did this?” Mikey ask getting another head shake from Frank.

“I just got off the phone with Brian,” Ray started. “He says he is going to make a couple of calls and see what he can find out. I told him I would call him back in a bit.”

“Wow this is going to be interesting.” Mikey said scratching the side of his nose thinking.

“I was just on a couple of fan sites and none of them have gotten wind of it yet. Maybe we can put a lid on this and squash it as a rumor before it gets to crazy.” Bob said sitting down in the floor near the coffee table.

Everyone fell silent. Anna began to cry. Alicia did her best to keep her from getting completely worked up.

“Here finish feeding him. Hand me her.” Frank said putting James quickly into Mikey’s arms.

He picked up Anna and tried to bounce and shush her. She didn’t stop.

“Ok… uh… let’s see… Does she need a bottle?” Frank said walking from spot to spot trying to think what he needed to do.

“It’s been a couple of hours since she’s had one.” Alicia said getting up to go get a bottle out of her bag they had brought in with them. “I will warm one for you.”

“Throw me her pacifier.” Frank told Alicia.

She dug through the bag for a second and threw the little apparatus at him. He popped it into her mouth quickly as Alicia warmed the bottle. He continued to walk and bounce trying to keep her happy for a minute.

“Lord this is going to be a full time job.” Frank said thinking about dealing with both Anna and James daily.

On cue, Gerard entered the room having heard the shrill cries of his daughter. He was homely looking to say the least. He had on the “Sugar Babies” pajama pants Jamia had brought him, a t-shirt on inside out, a robe that looked like rats had been sucking on it. His stomach still looked around five to six months pregnant and lumpy through the clothes. He stood there and yawned rubbing his eyes with both fists.

“Well hello.” He said seeing the many faces staring at him.

Gerard’s eyes were still slightly glazed over. This had more to do with the pain meds he was on than him being sleepy. He held his stomach and grimaced slightly, walking into the kitchen, no doubt dealing with some discomfort. He pulled a brown pill bottle off the top of the refrigerator and got a glass from the cabinet. Popping the top on the pill bottle, he sighed looking into it. He didn’t want to take them but he had to, he felt like shit. Gerard quickly swallowed two of the white pills chasing it with a half glass of water. He walked out of the kitchen.

“Oh wow Anna’s back, and I didn’t even realize. I heard crying and thought it was James again.” He walked over to the kitchen table past the laptop.

Everyone suddenly held their breath hoping he didn’t notice the computer screen and what was on it. Gerard sluggishly passed it and picked up his digital camera from the table. He made his way past it again not noticing a thing. He started to snap pictures of Mikey and James, then Ray sitting in the chair, then Frank walking around feeding Anna. No one said anything they just posed and smiled for his camera.

Gerard stopped making pictures and raised an eyebrow.

“What is up with you guys?” He asked suddenly noticing the silence.

“Nothing it’s just a bit wild here with both babies and all.” Frank said acting as if everything was right with the world.

Gerard asked no more questions. He put down the camera and walked back over to Frank.

“Let me see my little chunky monkey.” Gerard said smiling.

Frank pulled the bottle from her mouth causing her to whine loudly. Gerard quickly situated her and put the bottle back in her mouth, “There ya go.”

He noticed and empty chair and lowered himself into it groaning slightly.

“When she gets through eating we are going to spread some blankets on the couch and make their pictures together!” Gerard said acting a bit more lively.

“Oh Frankie we should put them in those little Ramones onesies I bought. They will match!” Gerard said, beaming.

“You want to match your brother? Do you? I bet you do.” Gerard said playfully as he kissed her chubby little cheek.

Frank stood beside Gerard’s chair. He squatted down beside him.

“Babe, we gotta talk.” He said as sweetly as he possibly could.

It was killing him to have to tell him. Gerard was so happy. He didn’t want to ruin it, but he had to tell him. He knew the guys wanted to decide what to do.

“Will you come back to the bedroom with me?” Frank said lightly running his fingers over Gerard’s arm.

“Now?” Gerard said smiling, “well I don’t think this is the time or place to get frisky.”

Frank giggled. The others were chatting among themselves.

“Yeah, no it’s not that. I just need to talk to you in private.” Frank said trying not to sound upset.

“Okay.” Gerard said, “you are gonna have to help me up.”

Frank grabbed him under the arm that wasn’t supporting Anna and helped him up.

“God that fucking hurts to use those muscles down there.” He said a little winded from the effort.

They got to the bedroom.

“You should sit down.” Frank said moving the clothes from the chair near the bed.

Gerard eyed Frank with a curious concern. Something was up but he couldn’t figure out what. He sat down still feeding Anna. Frank knelt in front of his legs and put his hands on Gerard's knees.

“What’s going on Frankie?” Gerard asked.

“Okay, don’t go nuts. Promise me you will just listen.” He said slowly patting Gerard on the knees.

Gerard nodded.

“Alright… Ray was on the internet… a couple hours ago… and found something.” Frank said pausing between his words.

Gerard nodded slowly listening carefully.

“It was on MTV’s news page… an article… about us.” Frank said stopping.

“And?” Gerard asked tired of him beating around the bush.

“Well… its title was Baby Makes Three.” Frank hushed and looked at Gerard.

Gerard’s eyes flew wide and his chin fell, causing his mouth to gape open.

“Now hear me out.” Frank said taking note of Gerard’s reaction.

Gerard took a huge deep breath and blew it out slowly, trying to prevent another freak out.

“Ray has called Brian. He’s on it. He is going to make a few calls. We have several options here. We can deny it, say it's all lies. Then there is the option of confirming it, like in a press release or press conference or something. And there is always the option of doing absolutely nothing and just sitting in the house for months until it hopefully blows over.” Frank tried to explain calmly.

He stopped talking and waited for Gerard to speak. The shocked man leaned back against the chair. Gerard looked down hearing an empty sucking sound. The bottle was completely empty.

“Ah shit… I have sat here and let her take this whole bottle without burping her.” He said pulling the bottle from her mouth.

He tossed it unexpectedly toward Frank who fumbled to catch it. Gerard picked her up and bent her forwards patting her gently on the back. She immediately spit up all down the leg of his pajama pants.

“Ah god.” He hissed.

Frank jumped up and ran to the bathroom for a towel. He came back in and mopped the goo off Gerard’s leg and the front of Anna’s outfit.

“I can’t do fucking nothing right.” Gerard growled making no mention of the article or what he wanted to do.

“It’s okay, she’s okay. She probably just had an air bubble or something.” Frank tried to assure him.

He cuddled Anna to him closing his eyes. Frank watched, waiting for him to say something. Gerard leaned back in the chair and closed his eyes. A single tear slid from his closed eye. Frank sighed.

“I’m so sorry.” Gerard whispered. He didn’t want to talk he didn’t want to break down like a lunatic.

He fought the tears with all he had. Frank stood up and cupped Gerard’s flushed cheeks in his hands

“Fuck ‘em!” He said softly causing Gerard to open his eyes.

“They can all rot in hell.” Frank continued.

“I am happy, you are happy. We have two precious babies. We are a family. Who gives a flying fuck what anyone says or thinks.” Frank said.

Gerard looked away from Frank’s eyes his face still in his hands, more tears spilling on to his cheeks. He wished it was so simple.

“Look at me… I love you. I will tell anyone who asks. I don’t care who knows.” Frank said causing Gerard to look up at him again.

He bent down until his lips met Gerard’s. He kissed him softly. Gerard kissed his back.

“What are we going to do?” Gerard asked with half a voice, pulling away from the kiss.

Frank propped himself on the arms of the chair with his hands still face to face with Gerard.

“I tell you what. You let me and the guys worry about that. We will discuss it and check with you before we do anything.” Frank searched Gerard’s face to see if this would be ok.

Gerard nodded wiping the tears from his eyes.

“Now… let’s go dress these kids up and have a photo shoot.” Frank said smiling.

CHAPTER 37B

Frank kept rereading the caption over and over “Baby Makes Three”. He felt nauseous.

“I knew this was going to happen. I knew it.” Ray spoke into his hands, his whole life crumbling in his mind with one article on the internet.

Frank turned his eyes to the page once more. He read it again.

“There is more to it. There is a whole article about it if you clicked on the link. There wasn’t enough ink in the damn printer to print the article, fucking piece of shit.” Bob said verbally assaulting Ray’s printer.

Frank jumped to his feet and quickly walked over to his laptop on the small kitchen table. He flipped it open and turned it on. Bob followed close behind pulling up a chair beside him.

Franks hands were still shaking. He couldn’t even focus on the computer screen. All he could think about was his sweet baby boy being ridiculed for this. This was not the way it was supposed to go. It shouldn’t be happening like this. “Who did this?” He mumbled.

“I don’t know I really don’t know. I mean whoever did this knew everything. They knew details about Gerard, about you; it had to be someone from the inside.” Bob couldn’t believe it was happening either.

“Jamia, I bet it was her. I bet you a billion fucking dollars it was her.” Frank said finally getting his internet explorer up and running.

Ray jumped in his seat. He reached into his pocket pulling out his vibrating phone. He answered, “Hello.”

“Yes, I’ve seen it.” Ray moaned into the phone. Someone else had seen it.

“Dude I don’t think it was Jamia. I mean it had mentions of her in it, well not by name but calling her your wife. So I don’t think it would be her really. I could be wrong.” Bob said leaning back in the chair.

Frank had turned his attention to Ray on the phone. “I’m gonna have to call you back. I am at Gerard’s and I can’t talk right now.” He said not offering any information to the person on the line.

Bob’s phone started to ring. “Okay that’s it everyone’s phone goes on silent until we figure this out.” He announced clicking ignore and shoving the phone back in his pocket.

“Ray call Brian, tell him to get online and look at the article. Then ask him what the hell we should do.” Bob instructed Ray who immediately started punching numbers.

“Oh my God, there it is. Every freaking person that checks MTV news knows about this.” Frank said flopping back in his chair after finishing the article, “Everyone.”

“We need to call Mikey.” Ray said with the phone to his ear waiting for Brian to answer.

“Hey... Uh you need to get online and look at something, you are going to go ape shit.” Ray said walking to the window. He peeped through the blinds making sure they weren’t being watched, acting like a paranoid mental patient.

“Mikey will be here any minute.” Frank said looking at clock on his computer. “He is bringing Anna home.”

“This is going to blow his mind.” Bob said folding his arms over his chest as he pushed the chair onto it’s back legs and rocked it.

“Hell no one is going to take this lightly.” Frank said backing up to the main news page again.

“When are you going to tell Gerard?” Bob asked looking at the tired man.

“Ah God, I don’t even want too. He has been through so much the last few days. He’s so worn out.” Frank said blowing out a breath causing his cheeks to puff.

“Can we just run away to Canada?” Frank asked Bob rubbing his hands over his face.

“They have the internet there too.” Bob joked causing Frank to laugh.

He hadn’t laughed in days. He suddenly realized this might not be as bad as it seemed. Sure he was fucking his lead singer and got him pregnant. Britney Spears would be running around again the next day possibly shaving her head again. Some other singer would be having a baby to blog about within the next week. All they had to do was hunker down and let it blow over. Did they have to confirm it? Frank didn’t know but they didn’t have to tell anyone anything if they didn’t want too, or they could lay it all out in a press release through their label.

He could hear the creak of the chair as Bob rocked back and forth on its back legs. Ray could be heard hashing it all out on his phone as Brian read the article. He heard a faint cry. James… he got up out of the chair. “I’m going to get the baby. Gee needs some rest.” Frank said walking out of the kitchen down the hall.

Gerard had roused slightly hearing James whimper.

“Shhh,” Frank said taking the baby in his arms and kissing his head.

Gerard started to get up his eyes were still glazed with sleep.

“No, no you stay in here and get some rest. We will be fine.” Frank leaned down and kissed Gerard’s cheek.

“I’m sure he is just hungry.” Gerard yawned pulling the pillow into the crook of his neck closing his eyes again.

“Okay.” Frank said.

He took the baby into the nursery and put his little blue pacifier in his mouth. He kissed him on the forehead as he laid him on the changing table. “Daddy loves his little man,” he said gently touching him on the nose.

“The whole world knows about James Anthony now. So much for sending out birth announcements.” Frank said in a soft childish voice.

James eyes blinked as he smacked on his pacifier. Frank finished changing his diaper and walked back into the front of the apartment.

“Everything okay?” Bob asked.

“Just peachy!” He chirped with a large fake smile then giggled.

“You sure are handling this better than we thought you would.” Bob observed still rocking in the kitchen chair.

“Yeah well I just decided that this might not be the end of the world after all. We don’t have to worry about the fans. They will love us no matter what. I mean this has nothing to do with our music. This is our personal life. As long as we sell records our label isn’t going to drop us.” Frank had it all thought out. Bob nodded in agreement.

“As long as we sell records and still have a fan base you guys aren’t going to have to worry about anything. It’s me and Gerard who will be poked and prodded and asked a billion questions.” Frank paused thinking a minute.

“Well actually you guys will probably be asked a million questions too.” Frank walked into the kitchen and pulled out a bottle popping it in the microwave.

“I will just tell everyone and their mother to fuck off.” Bob said bringing the chair back to its intended position.

This made Frank smile. That’s right everyone and their mother could fuck off, he thought to himself.

Chapter 37a

“Guys, this isn’t good.” Bob said bursting through the door of Gerard’s hospital room.

“What, what oh fuck what?” Gerard began to freak out.

Frank followed Bob inside. Frank took his place between the bed and Ray and began to pace.

“Okay, alright, Frank and I were outside on a bench. We were talking… well about the baby.” Bob paused.

Gerard’s eyes darted from Frank to Bob, Frank to Bob and back again. He bit his thumbnail furiously. “What!” Gerard exclaimed causing the baby to jump slightly. Gerard patted his bottom.

“I don’t know, we don’t know who it was but someone heard us.” Bob said sitting down in the chair beside Ray.

“What the hell did you say that they heard?” Ray asked worriedly. He could feel the sweat forming on his forehead. He felt woozy.

Frank continued to pace. This was his worst fear. He knew something would happen.

“Maybe it was just Jamia. Maybe she was hanging around spying. Please God let it have been Jamia.” Frank pleaded with the air, the lord, the room, the ceiling as he paced.

Gerard watched Frank. He got up slowly and put the baby in his plastic bassinet sleeping soundly. He walked to the end of the bed and grabbed Frank by the wrists stopping his movements.

“What did you guys say?” Gerard asked looking Frank directly in the eye, with calm in his voice that surprised everyone in the room.

Frank proceeded to recall their brief conversation on the bench word for word. He was so upset.

“I knew I shouldn’t have opened my fucking mouth. No one was around when we sat down.” Frank said mentally kicking his own ass.

“You didn’t know dude. I mean we thought we were alone.” Bob tried to assure Frank.

“Well there is nothing we can do about it now. What was said was said and well there is nothing we can do.” Gerard said.

“I do think, however, you should call and apologize to Jamia. She was trying to be nice earlier and you pretty much ripped her a new one. I don’t think you should go pissing her off.” Gerard stated forcefully.

“What did you do to Jamia?” Bob asked looking completely confused.

Frank rolled his eyes and plopped down on the end of Gerard’s bed. He shook his head.

“He wasn’t very nice when she came to visit earlier.” Gerard told Bob.

“You don’t know.” Frank said almost inaudible.

“What?” Gerard said crossing his arms.

“You don’t know the whole story!” Frank said louder his back to them all.

Gerard raised an eyebrow. He tried to think what he might have missed. He walked over and eased back down on the bed by Frank.

“What do we not know?” Gerard glanced at Ray and Bob and back to Frank, scared of the answer he might get.

“The other night when we got to the hospital, you and Ray were inside. I was parking the car and she showed up.” Frank said quietly.

“She was at the hospital?” Ray asked thinking back not remembering her ever being there.

Gerard frowned listening. Frank flipped around putting a curled leg under him.

“She decided that she would come to the hospital. Why? Who the fuck knows, but it turned into an attempt to talk about me and her, at the worst possible time.” Frank said looking at Gerard.

Gerard’s eyes searched Frank’s pained face. Frank took a deep breath, “I told her it was over.”

“What? You did?” Gerard asked almost whispering. He never thought he would end it. He never thought it would happen. He swallowed hard.

“Come on man…” Bob slapped Ray on the arm. “We will see if anyone is lurking around your room or the waiting room.” Bob pulled Ray by the arm, both men feeling awkward for being there.

The two of them left Frank and Gerard alone.

“I did,” Frank finally answered. “You’re my life now,” Frank said picking up Gerard’s hand from his lap clasping it between the two of his.

“I am really sorry. I shouldn’t have told you to shut up. I was an ass. I just… I just don’t know what to do. I love that baby more than anything in this world. I want him to have a normal life.” Frank sighed and fell silent.

Gerard looked at Frank’s hand… the ring was gone, only a white line where his skin had tanned around it. He looked at his own hand; his was still there, still on his finger. He had never thought to take it off. Gerard reached up taking the back of Frank’s head in his hand, pulling him to his soft chest. He wrapped his arms around him and kissed the top of his head.

“I’m sorry.” Gerard breathed into his hair.

It was no easy task leaving the hospital unnoticed. The hospital staff had been very helpful in keeping things private for them. They allowed them to leave through a back entrance and early in the morning when there weren’t many visitors around.

Gerard was pissed off. He couldn’t do it anymore without pain medicine. He had to begin taking them again. The c-section had been a piece of cake it was the complete hysterectomy that was causing him pain now. This petrified him. He had an ever present fear of getting addicted to them.

Mikey and Alicia would be bringing Anna home that evening. His mother had been the doting Grandma during his hospital stay. Gerard couldn’t wait to have his two babies together making pictures and introducing them. He would have been wild with excitement if the meds weren’t making him so goofy.

Frank unpacked their things, putting them where they belonged. He was so tired. He hadn’t slept at all the night before. He tossed and turned on the uncomfortable cot. Every time he closed his eyes that night all he could see was the glimpse of the person listening. It made him sick to his stomach. He pushed it to the back of his mind once again. Frank put the bags away and walked back into the bedroom. The only light was the little daylight left outside filtering in through the window. He walked slowly to the bed. Gerard lay on his side sleeping soundly. His arm still donned the hospital bracelet they had given him. That arm kept a softly guarded James close to him.

Frank kicked off his shoes and gently climbed onto bed with them. He scooted in close to the two of them, kissing the brown fuzz on top of the baby’s head. He draped an arm gently over Gerard’s hip as he listened to his slow rhythmic breaths.

A sharp continuous wrapping on the door roused him from his light sleep. Frank shot straight up out of the bed. He had drifted off to sleep and hadn’t even realized it. He slid off the bed almost running to the door, his heart thumping wildly. He flung it open to see what the hell was so urgent.

“What the fuck?” He was face to face with Ray and Bob, both looked extremely upset and worried.

“What… What?” Frank asked them knowing something was wrong.

They pushed their way inside immediately. Bob shut the door and turned the lock just to be safe. Frank walked backwards his eyes darting from the men to the piece of paper Bob held in his hand.

“This is bad man… this is really bad.” Bob said.

Fear washed over Frank from the top of his head to his toes. He watched Ray take a seat in a chair, putting his head in his hands. Frank looked back at Bob.

“Seriously guys what the hell is going on?” He could see the concern written all over Bob’s face.

Bob grabbed him by the arms, “Sit.” He instructed pushing Frank onto the couch.

He handed Frank the paper in his hand sitting down beside him. “Ray found this about an hour ago.”

Frank opened the folded piece of paper. All color drained from his face. His hands began to shake, his breathing hitched and huffed in every way it could. His voice croaked as he spoke.

“Oh dear god… they know.”

Chapter 36

Gerard looked at Frank, why the hell would he say that to her she just came to see the baby? He could see Frank’s jaw flexing. Why would he be mad?

“What are you doing?” Frank asked through clenched teeth.

Gerard decided he better stop him now.

“She came to see the baby and brought…” Gerard began.

“Shut up, Gerard.” Frank stopped him.

Gerard blinked his eyes as wide as saucers, not knowing what to do or say at this point. Frank had never told him to shut up before. He looked at Jamia who wasn’t quite as shocked as Gerard.

“Is there a particular reason you came here and don’t give me bullshit answers.” Frank said chunking the things in his hand onto the cot across the room. Gerard covered his mouth. He hadn’t seen him like this in a long time.

Jamia blinked.

“I should go. It was a mistake.” She said slowly rising from the chair with the baby. James was still sucking away on his bottle.

“Hand him here now.” Frank raised his voice, holding out his arms.

“Uh… maybe you should give him to me for now.” Gerard was a tiny bit scared Frank might handle him too roughly in his current state of mind.

Frank shot him another look. Gerard threw up his hands and looked away from Frank’s glare. He was shutting up. Jamia was now unsure who to give the baby to so she just stood there wide eyed staring at Frank. He didn’t ask again. He took one step and was practically on top of her. He forcefully took the baby from her. The bottle fell to the floor. The baby started to cry having his meal interrupted and feeling the tension in Frank.

Frank quickly hugged him close and bounced.

“I think you can go now.” Frank said hatefully.

He walked past her to the window and didn’t turn back around. Jamia picked up her bag and looked at Gerard, who couldn’t even look up. He just stared at the bed picking at the blanket. Jamia turned leaving quickly without saying another word. Gerard sat there for a few seconds then looked up. Frank had gotten James settled back down. He caressed the top of his head with his lips placing small kisses all over it.

Frank wouldn’t look at Gerard. Gerard thought it best to put the things Jamia had brought them away. He placed them all back in the box and slid it under the hospital bed. He flipped on the television and turned up the volume to push the silence from the room.

The door swung open bumping the wall causing Gerard to jump. He just knew it was going to be her pissed off and wielding a knife or IV stand to impale Frank with.

“Okay, where is this little baby you two lug nuts managed to create.” Bob said entering in loud fashion.

Gerard quickly turned on a smile.

“Hey! It’s about time you got here.” He said turning the televisions volume down.

He wasn’t alone. Ray trudged in behind him. He flashed Gerard an awkward smile. Frank turned around proudly. Bob leaned into the floor, “Looks like you dropped a bottle.” He sat the tiny bottle on the side table and walked over to Frank.

“Damn it Frank, could he look more like you?” Bob asked in amazement.

He turned around to Ray, “Look at him.”

Ray walked around to the see the baby.

“Wow. He does.” Ray stated his eyes widening.

“I thought newborns didn’t favor anyone at first?” Bob questioned looking up at Frank.

He just pursed his lips together, raised his eyebrows, and shrugged. Bob took notice.

“Hey why don’t you come down and let me buy you something to eat? It’s nearly lunch time. I bet you could eat.” He said flashing Gerard a look. Gerard nodded furiously.

That was one thing about the guys. They knew each other like they knew themselves. They had spent entirely too much time together. This was overly evident in the baby that lay in Frank’s arms.

“I don’t know.” Frank finally spoke.

“Go ahead, I will be fine. Ray’s here.” Gerard tried to reassure him knowing he needed to get out for a bit.

“Yeah man I will keep them company.” Ray said taking a seat in the chair Jamia had been in earlier.

“Come on….” Bob drew out pulling on Frank’s neck.

Frank walked over to Gerard handing the baby to him. Gerard eyed him cautiously.

“You will be okay?” He asked looking down at him.

Gerard nodded, “Oh yeah we will be fine, we are going to visit with Uncle Ray.” Gerard said looking at the baby.

Frank walked over to the small table by Ray’s chair and picked up the bottle. Everyone watched as he took it to the sink and rinsed the nipple off. He dried it with a paper towel and handed it to Gerard. “I don’t think he was finished with that when she dropped it.” Frank said without emotion.

Bob frowned at Gerard in confusion, who rolled his eyes in return. Frank had turned to walk out the door.

“Do you want anything?” Bob asked Gerard.

“Yeah I will take some coffee on your way back.” Gerard requested.

“Coffee it is. Ray you?” Bob asked standing half way out the door. Frank stood waiting in the hall with his arms crossed over his chest, a blank stare resting on his face.

“Nah man, I'm fine, thanks.” Ray returned.

Bob walked out letting the door close on his way.

“You alright man?” Bob asked as he walked beside Frank elbowing him slightly.

“Nope, I’m not.” Frank said bluntly.

Bob was surprised by his answer. Frank drew in a breath and let it out fast almost a huff. Bob stopped walking and stared at him. Frank knew he stopped. He turned around walking backwards.

“What's the deal? You coming?” He said motioning for Bob. He caught back up with him.

“I'm really fucking worried.” Frank said.

“About?” Bob asked looking at Frank waiting for him to elaborate.

Frank looked up at Bob. “You have to ask?”

They turned down a hall and headed straight out the door. They came to a bench outside the rear entrance to that wing of the hospital. Frank and Bob both glanced around. They were alone. They took a seat on the wrought iron bench. Frank pulled his cigarettes out and lit one. He drew in a long breath inhaling the white smoke. He held it in then let it out slowly.

“I just can’t get over how much he looks like me.” Frank said after a forever of silence.

Bob nodded looking down at the ground. “No doubt,” he chuckled pushing a rock around with the toe of his shoe.

“How the fuck is Gerard going to explain that?” Frank asked him.

“They are definitely gonna wonder how he ended up with two kids when they know full well Lindsey had only one. Everyone already knows about her.” Bob said not helping Frank’s worries at all.

“Do you guys have a plan at all?” Bob asked sort of worried about all of them.

“Well Gerard says we can say that he and Lindsey were adopting, but I told him that didn’t make any sense her being pregnant and all.” Frank said taking another drag off his cigarette. He put his face in his hands and growled.

Bob plucked the cigarette from Frank’s fingers and took a drag off it, handing it back to him.

“I wish I could tell you guys what to do. I have no fucking clue what I would do if I were in your shoes.” Bob said blowing smoke out with his words.

“He’s a cutie though.” Bob said poking Frank in the ribs with his finger.

“I want everyone to know he’s mine. I just want to take him out in Times Square and scream look people look at this beautiful boy, he’s my son!” Frank yelled loudly.

Bob rubbed Frank’s slumped over back. “I know man… I know.”

“But I can’t.” Frank sighed feeling a lump forming in his throat.

Frank noticed something from the corner of his eye, something familar. He looked up quickly. Someone had been listening.

Chapter 35

Gerard sat on the hospital bed, legs folded, in a pair of Frank’s black sweats and a random t-shirt, his hair damp from the shower. He sketched enthusiastically in a book Frank had bought for him. His eyes bouncing from the book to James who lay sound asleep at the foot of the bed on a white woven blanket. Frank was still passed out on the cot beside them, his sleep deprivation getting the best of him.

Gerard was doing really well. He was off the pain meds already and they would be going home the next day.

He gently covered the sleeping baby as he eased himself off the bed. He walked quietly to the mirror that hung behind the sink in the corner of the room. He turned to the side and raised his shirt. He poked his stomach making it jiggle. He surveyed the damage of the last nine months. He raised his eyebrows and sighed, “Good thing I wasn’t hot to begin with.” He said out loud.

“What the fuck ever,” came a voice behind him.

Gerard rolled his eyes and head towards Frank.

“You think that shit's sexy?” Gerard said taking a hand poking his tender stomach again.

“It looks like gravy.” He said moving gently from side to side his belly slowly lagged behind.

Gerard chuckled.

“Hey more for me to squeeze!” Frank said hugging himself like an idiot.

Gerard lowered his shirt and walked over to the small closet. He tried to bend down to get his brush out of his bag.

“Oww, fuck!” He grunted straightening up slowly unable to retrieve his brush.

Frank scooted off the cot quickly.

“Are you nuts? You are going to bust your stitches if you don’t cool it!” Frank squatted down to the bag below Gerard, “What were you trying to get?”

“The brush.” Gerard stated holding his aching stomach.

He got up and handed Gerard the brush.

“I’m gonna pop into the bathroom and take a shower. Will you be okay?” Frank asked with his hands on his hips.

“Oh yeah, me and little man will be just fine.” Gerard assured him sitting back down on the bed rubbing the boy’s head lovingly as he slept.

Frank popped over to the end of the bed and kissed his head. “Alright I will be out soon.”

He retrieved some things from their suitcase and went into the bathroom.

Gerard uncovered the baby and checked his diaper. He was wet. He pulled a diaper from a drawer underneath the clear plastic bassinet beside his bed. He slowly changed the sleeping child. He pulled the diaper back and was immediately met with a stream of pee.

“Oh God whoa!” Gerard yelped throwing the clean diaper over his son’s parts.

Gerard smiled, “Wow you already have talent.”

He turned to get another diaper with one hand holding the now soiled diaper with the other.

“Need some help?” Someone asked. Gerard hadn’t heard the door open.

He looked up seeing Jamia.

“Oh hi, come in.” He said with a smile. He had no idea she had shown up the day before. Frank hadn’t mentioned it.

Jamia carried a large white box with a black bow on top. She smiled.

“I think I’ve got it now.” He said fastening the tabs on the new diaper, pulling the tiny gown back down over the baby’s legs. He folded the two used diapers into balls and tossed them across the room into the trash like a basketball. He looked back at Jamia and noticed her staring at the baby. He felt a pang of sympathy knowing what she was thinking. It was obvious who the baby belonged to. She bit her lip.

“He’s so pretty.” She said softly almost wanting to cry.

Gerard bent down blocking her view of the baby, “Want to hold him?” He asked.

He backed off again her eyes following him.

”Are you sure it’s okay?” Jamia asked. She fully assumed he knew about her confrontation with Frank outside that early morning.

“Well yeah, I wouldn’t have offered.” Gerard was trying to be nice.

She went to reach for the baby realizing she was still holding the box.

“Here,” she said extending the box out to Gerard. “This is for you.”

“Thank you… you didn’t have to get the baby a gift.” Gerard said pursing his lips together.

Jamia lifted the baby, gently cradling him in her arms. She couldn’t take her eyes off him.

“No it’s for you not him.” Jamia said taking a seat in the chair at the end of the bed.

Gerard looked at her funny. He put the box down in front of him and lifted the lid off. Gerard pulled out the tissue paper on top of the gift.

“Hell yeah!” He exclaimed looking inside.

There were at least twelve new comic books in the box. Gerard lifted them out noticing some sort of clothing underneath. He laid the comics aside digging into the box again. He pulled out two pairs of pajama pants. Both were yellow with red writing. One had the phrase “Sugar Daddy” all over them; the other had “Sugar Babies”. Gerard smiled wide and giggled.

“Thanks! These are awesome.” Gerard said folding the pants neatly into his lap.

“I thought you might be able to use a pair that weren’t completely stretched out. The mediums are Frank’s and the size large ones are yours.” She informed him nodding towards the pants in his lap.

“Oh ok, thank you so much you did not have to do that.” Gerard said placing the pants back into the box.

He watched as Jamia touched the baby’s hands, her eyes tracing his familiar facial features. Gerard wasn’t sure what to say to her. After all what do you say to the wife of your boyfriend, whose baby you’ve just given birth to? They don’t really make greeting cards or flavored coffees for such occasions as this.

“What’s his name?” Jamia asked softly with a slight lump in her throat.

“James Anthony.” Gerard told her tears threatening his own eyes for her.

Tears came to her eyes. She tried not to let them fall forcing her eyes open fighting a blink. She nodded. They sat in silence for a moment. Gerard could see she didn’t need to talk. She took a deep breath and sighed; the tears running down her cheeks. Gerard watched as the tears that had threatened him made their way into his eyes. She took her hand away from the baby wiping her eyes with it.

“I’m sorry this is just a little overwhelming.” She said still wiping her eyes.

The baby started to squirm and suck his fist furiously. She started to panic a little. She looked up at Gerard quickly.

“Oh he’s fine, its time for him to eat again.” He informed her easing himself off the bed to get a bottle off the counter.

She bounced the baby gently while Gerard prepared the bottle. She watched how naturally he did things. As if he had been taking care of babies his entire life. He walked over to her with the bottle. Jamia started to lift the little guy to Gerard.

“You don’t want to feed him?” Gerard offered. It was the least he could do.

“You don’t care?” She asked a bit surprised he was letting her be so free with the baby. She started to feel guilty for all the times she had been so cruel to him.

“Nah, its fine… it’s not that hard just put it in his mouth and he will do the rest.” Gerard instructed her as she took the bottle from his hands.

The hungry baby immediately took the bottle without very much effort on her part.

“I need to sit back down. I think I have been over doing things a little today.” Gerard said to no one specific.

“Yeah don’t stand up on my account.” Jamia said not taking her eyes off the sweet infant.

The two sat in awkward silence for a couple of minutes.

“So what will you guys call him?” She asked thinking about the name they had given the boy.

“Huh… Oh you mean which name.” Gerard answered unsure of what she was speaking. He had been reading through one of the comics Jamia had given him.

“We are calling him James.” He said finally putting down the book in his hand.

Frank gathered his things in the bathroom. He heard voices from the other side of the door but couldn’t figure out who Gerard was talking too. He put his shoes on stepping out the door and around the corner. He stopped in his tracks, seeing the person feeding his son. He felt the anger rising in him instantly.

“What…the…fuck?” He asked in a tone that caught both Gerard and Jamia off guard.

CHapter 34

Alicia and Donna sat cooing over Anna passing her back and forth between the two of them. Donald paced nervously. He was in constant fear the boys would be found out. Frank’s mom stayed outside, smoking like a chimney. Frank’s dad wandered around aimlessly. Ray and Mikey sat playing an ignorant game of paper football field goals. All were crammed together in the small surgery waiting area.

Frank bopped down the hall the only article of clothing recognizable was his black and white sneakers sticking from underneath the green scrubs. He smiled so widely he was sure his jaws would be permanently stuck in that shape. He still sported his lovely green surgery hat. The nurse opened the door escorting him inside. Everyone in the waiting area looked up. Mouths gaped, lips formed into smiles, and a couple of pictures were snapped of Frank and his son.

“Say hey guys.” Frank paused as everyone cooed. “I would like you to meet James Anthony.” Frank said folding the blanket further away from the baby’s face.

The little guy blinked again blinded by the lights in the waiting area.

Mikey grinned at the name so did Donald.

“James Anthony,” Frank’s dad repeated. “That’s a good solid name.”

Donna wiped tears away snapping another picture, “He looks just like you Frank.”

Frank beamed. He couldn’t contain his happiness. Another tear escaped his eye. Everyone congratulated him.

“Is Gerard okay?” Mikey questioned.

“Oh hell yeah, he made it through like a champ. I wasn’t going to leave him but he wanted me to come introduce James to you all. He was so excited for you guys to meet him.” Frank explained his reason for being out there.

The nurse stepped up beside Frank, “You can come with me to the nursery with him. We will get him weighed, measured and give him a bath. Then we will bring him to the room once your… once Mr. Way is in his room.” The nurse hesitated almost calling Gerard his wife.

Frank nodded.

“Ok little buddy, tell everyone bye.” Frank said lifting his tiny fist and waving with it.

Frank left taking the baby too the nursery.

Frank sat nervously in the hospital room. He had everyone checking to make sure no press had gotten wind of the birth. It was now 7:30am and he was ready to crash. He hadn’t had any sleep. He was running on adrenaline at this point.

A nurse suddenly entered propping the door open. They pushed Gerard into the room lying on the gurney. He looked beat. Frank stepped aside to allow the nurses to transfer him to the room’s bed. They checked his vitals and set up his pain medication pump that went directly into his IV.

They finally finished and he walked up beside the bed. Gerard looked up and smiled. “He is fucking gorgeous.” Frank said leaning down to kiss Gerard lightly on the lips.

“You did an amazing job.” Frank said hovering above Gerard.

Gerard tried to move hissing slightly from the pulling it caused in his stomach.

“Oh shit dude does it hurt bad?” Frank asked looking down at Gerard’s slightly deflated stomach.

“Nah not too bad it’s sore more than anything. I can’t really feel the incision… it’s numb.” Gerard explained deciding to let the bed lift him and not his muscles.

Gerard elevated the head of the bed putting himself in a semi-sitting position. A nurse came through the door. Gerard looked down at the beauty of an outfit he still had on.

“Is there anyway I could take this gown off?” He looked at her grimacing slightly.

“Yes, Sir. Is there something in particular you would like to up on?” She asked.

Frank went around to his bag retrieving a misshapen t-shirt.

“Yeah that.” Gerard said pointing to the shirt Frank pulled from his bag.

The nurse began to thread the shirt over the IV’s box and down the tube sticking Gerard’s attached arm through first. The door to the room opened. Gerard looked up at Frank pulling the sheet to his chest as the nurse tried to get the t-shirt the remainder of the way on him. Frank clasped his hands together and smiled wide. A short lady appeared around the corner pushing a clear little box with their tiny baby inside.

Gerard’s eyes started to water, dripping onto his clean shirt. He wiped them trying to listen to what the lady was saying. He couldn’t take his eyes off the little guy.

He watched as Frank took the baby out of the bed and walked towards him shining. Frank cooed at the baby looking back up to Gerard.

“I think someone wants to see his Dad.” Frank said putting the squirming bundle into Gerard’s arms.

Frank sat down on the side of the bed and watched. The baby began to whimper slightly. Gerard drew him closer to his chest and began to hum. The baby hushed immediately. Gerard took a deep breath releasing a tired sigh.

“What did Mikey and the others think of his name?” Gerard asked Frank gently resting his cheek on the baby’s head smiling.

“Mikey got giggly, and you would have thought your Dad won the lottery. My Dad said it was a good solid name, and well the rest of them just cried.” Frank laughed watching Gerard and the baby fit together like puzzle pieces once missing.

He sat there silent for a moment taking it all in.

“They thought he looked like me too.” Frank said softly bringing a hand up to push Gerard’s fallen hair out of his eyes.

“He does! You wouldn’t even know I had anything to do with forming him.” Gerard said smiling. He couldn’t be more pleased with the fact.

Frank’s smile turned into pursed lips.

“That could come back to bite us in the ass.” Frank observed staring at practically his reflection in the baby’s face.

Gerard reached out and touched his hand. Frank brought his eyes to meet Gerard’s.

“Don’t worry. It will take them forever to make a connection and fuck it if they do.” Gerard said lacing his fingers into Frank’s, cuddling his son close.

The door knocked followed by Mikey and Alicia entering. Both grinned ear to ear as they walked over to the bed.

“Oh my god, look at that cutie!” Mikey exclaimed looking down at his namesake.

Gerard moved him around to be seen.

“Dude Frank, that’s totally your Mini Me!” Mikey said touching the baby’s light covering of hair.

Frank just smiled and nodded

Mikey scrunched his shoulders and grinned, “Can I hold him?”

“Well duh,” Gerard giggled.

Mikey put the little guy in his arm. He sniffed.

“Can we tell them?” He asked Alicia sniffing again to fight the tears.

She smiled sweetly and nodded.

Gerard looked at them inquisitively. Frank’s mind was a million miles away.

“Gee you’re going to be an uncle.” Mikey said proudly looking at Alicia who grinned.

In his drugged state Gerard sat there a moment before it registered. His eyes got big.

“You’re pregnant?” He gasped loudly looking at Alicia.

She nodded giggling slightly, “Yeah that’s why you haven’t seen much of me until recently. I have been deathly ill.”

“Been there, done that.” Gerard said raising his eyebrows.

“Congratulations! How far along are you?” Gerard asked smiling.

He glanced at Frank who no longer had a smile on his face clearly worried about something.

“Sixteen weeks.” Alicia said placing her hands on a small pudge under her shirt.

“Oh so you are out of the funk already.” He said causing her to nod.

The baby started to cry. This jolted Frank out of his daze. Mikey handed the sobbing child back to Gerard.

“He needs to eat.” Frank stated flatly. He was well adjusted to Anna’s cries and knew what he needed immediately.

Gerard nodded in agreement.

“I need to eat myself.” Gerard said.

“We can get you guys something.” Mikey offered looking from Gerard to Frank.

Frank didn’t acknowledge the statement as he continued to put the bottle together by the small sink.

“You don’t mind?” Gerard asked looking back at Mikey.

“Nope just tell me what you want and we’ll go get it.” Mikey said grabbing onto Alicia's waist.

“I am dying for cheese pizza. Would that be ok with you?” Gerard asked directing the question at Frank.

Frank just nodded. Gerard started to get concerned but didn’t say anything in front of the others.

“I don’t know if I can find cheese pizza at 8:00 in the morning but I will do my best.” Mikey giggled.

“Oh yeah right I forgot what time it was,” Gerard said thinking for a minute. “That’s ok. Just get me a bacon, egg and cheese McMuffin from McDonalds then.”

“Ok we will be back, call me if you think of something else you need while we are out.” Mikey said again as he and Alicia made their way out of the room.

Gerard thanked them but Frank remained silent. Gerard watched him wondering what was going through his mind as he brought him the bottle for James. He walked over and handed it to Gerard looking at the baby once again and smiled gently.

“Frankie, you okay?” Gerard asked frowning slightly.

Frank didn’t say anything. He sat down on the edge of the bed again watching as Gerard fed their son. Only gentle sucking sounds could be heard as they watched James take his bottle like a pro.

“Are you sure we should name him James Anthony?” Frank asked suddenly doubting the choice the two of them had made days earlier.

“Babe, I thought you loved that name?” Gerard asked frowning not understanding Frank’s concern.

“I do its just…” Frank stopped as he toyed with the bottom of the baby’s blanket.

Gerard eyed him curiously.

“He looks so much like me, is it really wise to name him after me?” Frank asked not sure it was a good idea at all.

“Look at me.” Gerard stated forcefully.

Frank’s watery eyes looked into Gerard’s.

“You’re his father,” Gerard paused. “We can’t use Iero so I want him to have one of your other names.

Frank nodded.

“Besides what the hell do people know? They will think I am naming him after my best friend.” Gerard said bumping Frank with his leg.

Frank took a deep breath and nodded again.

“I’m just worried about him.” Frank said touching the baby’s foot sticking out from under the blanket.

“Babe, he’s fine. He will be fine.” Gerard assured him.

Frank pulled the blanket over the tiny foot.

Chapter 33

Gerard lay on his side on the gurney in the middle of the operating room. The medicine the nurse had given him had calmed him some, but not completely.

“Now…Mr. Way we need you to bring your knees up as far as you can get them. Then stick your back out and hold it like that. Keep your head down and don’t move.” The anesthesiologist instructed him.

It was taking all his might not to shake like a leaf. He didn’t dare move. He was about to have a four-inch needle plunged into his spinal cord there was no way he would move. He could be paralyzed for life. He clenched his teeth and breathed slowly, feeling a stronger contraction wrack his body. He screwed his eyes shut and waited.

He tried to think of the end. He tried to think it would all be worth it. He and Frank would have their baby boy to hold. The only thing standing between that and him was a cut open belly.

He felt a prick in his middle back.

“This is to numb your back so you won’t feel the larger needle going in.” The doctor explained.

Gerard sighed gently in relief. He did not want to feel the bigger needle. His position was getting hard to hold. His belly made it almost impossible for him to draw up his legs or poke his back out. He panted feeling another contraction.

“Oh shit this one hurts.” He panted trying not to move.

“The needle?” The doctor asked.

“No I’m having a very horrible contraction and I’m starting to feel nauseous.” Gerard explained.

A nurse walked up and placed oxygen prongs to his nose, strapping them over his ears and around his head.

“This should help your nausea,” she said.

His nausea and contraction eased allowing him to relax a bit while they finished his spinal block.

“Now do not move. Dr. Young and I will put you on your back. If you move your head up and down you could get a spinal headache. Just go limp and we will do the rest.” The anesthesiologist informed him.

Gerard went as limp as a wet dish cloth. He closed his eyes fully assuming he was on the verge of being paralyzed for life. They put a small pillow beneath his head as they lay him on his back.

He stared up at the huge light turned on above him. He could see his reflection in its surrounding metal. He was flat of his back covered in pale green medical drapes; his arms were straight out beside him resting on some sort of arm rests. His pink gown was folded neatly above his belly. He watched as they placed pads underneath his gown on his chest to monitor his heart. They attached a pulse oxygen monitor to one of his fingers on his left hand.

He felt his feet and legs tingle.

“Um… are my legs supposed to be tingly?” He asked hoping more than life they were.

“Yes they are. That is how they will feel as they start to become completely numb. It starts at your feet and moves all the way up to your chest. This is what keeps you from feeling the incision.” The doctor explained to him as they put a sheet up above his abdomen to block his view of the surgery.

He heard a slight commotion behind his head but couldn’t turn it to look.

The anesthesiologist took a sharp pin like object and held it above his shoulder.

“Tell me when you can no longer feel me stick you with this.” Another needle, Gerard panicked a little squeezing his eyes shut.

He felt the doctor stick him in the shoulder and chest; then he felt nothing.

“There I can’t feel it.” He said with his eyes still closed.

“Here?” The doctor asked backing up a bit poking him again.

“Nope can’t feel it.” He said opening his eyes slowly.

“Ok we are ready to begin.” The doctor said taking his place below the raised sheet.

Gerard took a deep breath. He was startled when he felt someone grab his left hand. He turned his head slightly towards that side. Everyone looked the same. Green hat, face mask, and scrubs. He noticed the eyes.

“Frank! Finally!” He said looking up at the light once again. Frank squeezed his hand.

“I told you I wouldn’t leave you hanging in here.” Frank said his eyes shining as he smiled.

Tears rolled down the sides of Gerard’s face into his ears. Frank grabbed a nearby tissue and dabbed them away. He took Gerard’s hand again and held it tight.

Frank looked around the operating room. He noticed two small glass doors over to the right of them.

“Is that where they take the baby to clean him up?” He asked bending down to Gerard’s ear pointing towards the small white room.

“Yeah they take him there to suck out his mouth and nose, do his Apgar score and clean him up.” Gerard explained quietly.

“Hey how will I know when they have cut me open?” Gerard asked looking above him at the anesthesiologist.

“Well you won’t and they already have actually.” Gerard stared at the light squinting.

Frank squeezed his hand tighter, “Oh my god, he’s almost here!”

Gerard could make out only dark shades of red against the pale green sheets on his reflection in the light. Blood, his blood and lots of it, he had to look away.

“Okay we are about to pull the baby out you will feel a great deal of pressure. Take some deep breaths.” The doctor informed the men.

Gerard tried to breathe deep. He started to feel nauseous again.

“I think I am going to puke.” He barked afraid he actually would if he moved.

The doctor injected some sort of medicine into his open vein. His nausea immediately went away. He could feel the bed bump and shake slightly as they tried to get the baby out of him.

“Stand up and take a look.” The anesthesiologist told Frank, “they are about to pull the baby out.”

Frank stood up looking around the sheet above Gerard, he kept a hold of his hand not letting go once.

“Oh Jesus!” Frank said a bit shocked at what he saw.

He sat back down quickly not sure he wanted to see the baby come out.

“Is he out?” Gerard asked looking up at Frank.

“Not yet.” Frank said patting Gerard’s hand.

“Congratulations!” The doctor yelled through his mask, “He’s here!”

Gerard’s whole body shook as he cried. It was finished. It was finally over. He was here. He was out.

The doctor held the little ball of red and white goop above the sheet for them both to see. The baby whimpered weakly as they watched. Frank started to cry as hard as Gerard. He rubbed Gerard’s hair with his other hand and kissed his forehead. He rested his cheek against the man’s head.

“Thank you. Thank you so much for doing this.” Frank whispered, his tears running into Gerard’s long hair.

Gerard just continued to sob tears of joy. He thought his heart was going to burst. He reached up with his hand, cords and tubes running from it. He grabbed Frank by the side of the shirt pulling him face to face with him. He hoped like hell everyone in the OR was preoccupied. He put his IV filled hand on the back of Frank’s head and pulled him into a sweet kiss. Frank rose up slowly.

“I love you and that little boy more than life itself.” Gerard whispered hoarsely.

Their moment was interrupted by a nurse carrying a little bundle of blue. A delicate little face stuck up from between it. She walked around handing him to Frank.

Frank sniffed hard wiping an eye with one of his shoulders. He pulled his mask off his face. He looked at Gerard unable to speak from the lump in his throat. The tiny little boy blinked from the sudden onslaught of bright lights.

“Hi little man.” Frank cooed. “We have been waiting so long to meet you.” He said leaning him closer to Gerard so he could see him as well.

More tears fell from Gerard’s eyes as he lay there watching Frank and their son.

“He looks just like you.” Gerard said touching his tiny arm that stuck out from the blanket.

They admired the little boy quietly.

“Aww, he has hardly any hair.” Frank said moving the blanket back a bit smiling.

Gerard looked at his light brown sprigs of hair plastered to his head still damp with fluid and smiled.

“Mr. Iero you can take the baby out to meet the family if you would like.” The nurse explained to him.

Frank looked down at Gerard, still being worked on.

Gerard smiled nodding approvingly, “Go show him off Daddy.”

Chapter 32

The lady led them into a small room. It had a curtain for a door, a single hospital bed, monitors, a television, one small chair and a very menacing IV stand. Gerard felt weak in the knees looking at it. This was by all accounts his worst nightmare. He began to bite his fingernails.

Frank put the bags beside the small chair and sat down. He had never been this nervous. He didn’t mention it. He had to be there for Gerard. He had to do nothing. Gerard had to do everything. Frank would simply be an onlooker, there to possibly hold a hand if needed.

The lady explained to them that all parties involved were required by law and hospital regulations to keep everything that went on confidential. A nurse entered with her hands full of sterile packages and other things.

Gerard stood by the bed afraid to sit on it.

The lady left two of them with the nurse that would be caring for him and assisting with the caesarean.

“Okay Mr. Way,” the nurse said checking the chart. “It says your bag of water has broken?” She questioned looking up at him.

Gerard’s face turned bright red and he looked away from her gaze embarrassed.

“Yes.” He said quietly.

She leaned forward and put a hand on his arm. “There is absolutely nothing for you to be embarrassed about.”

Gerard raised his eyes back to hers. She had the most serious look on her face he had ever seen. This comforted him. He always felt judged by the medical staff that he had to deal with.

She smiled warmly. Gerard smiled slightly in return.

“Okay,” she chirped loudly. “Let’s get you out of those clothes and in this gown.”

She unfolded the gown and lay it down on the bed. Gerard stared at it blankly.

It was light pink with darker pink flowers all over it. It had two vertical slits on each side, in the front chest area.

He looked back up at her.

“What are those slits for?” He asked pointing towards the gown.

The nurse was opening packages and turning on machines when he asked the question. She answered continuing her preparations.

“Those are for after the baby is born, for mom’s that would like to breast feed.” She suddenly stopped realizing what she had just said.

Frank almost fell out of the chair. He snickered with his hand firmly clamped over his mouth. He wiggled in his chair dying inside. He couldn’t help it. All he could see was images of Gerard with tits again.

Gerard shot him a hateful look, Frank straightened up immediately.

“Oh I am sorry, let me run see if I can find something else.” The nurse said a little embarrassed.

The nurse hurried through the curtain leaving Frank and Gerard alone.

Gerard whipped his head around to look at Frank. He scowled so hard at him Frank should have burst into flames.

Frank knew he was in trouble.

“How’s about not laughing at me for the rest of the day asshole,” Gerard said kicking Frank in the shin.

Frank grabbed his aching leg.

“Ouch.” He said feeling bad.

“I wasn’t laughing at you. I was laughing because she said that to you. She’s an idiot.” Frank whined rubbing his leg briskly.

Gerard turned back to face the bed.

Frank stood up and rubbed his arm. “Come on babe, you know I love you. I would never make fun of you. I swear.”

The nurse came back in with a roll of fabric tape in her hand. Frank returned to his seat. Gerard frowned at the roll in her hand. He watched as she spread the gown out completely. She rose back up to speak.

“These are the only gowns we have.” She explained. Gerard clenched his jaws realizing he would have to wear it.

“You will only have to wear it during surgery and in recovery. Then you will be able to change into your own clothes.” She tried to encourage him.

Gerard nodded. He wasn’t opposed to pink, only the gaping boob holes in the front of it.

The nurse went about taping the slits closed with the white tape.

“There now they won’t gape open.” She said picking up the gown and handing it to Gerard. “I need you to take everything off. Put this on and go ahead and into bed. I will be back shortly to start your IV.”

Gerard grimaced at the idea of the IV. He held the gown and thought a second.

He blushed, “I uh… I sort of gush everywhere whenever I move.”

“Oh Hun its fine. There is a water proof pad on the bed. That is what its there for don’t worry. We deal with this a million times a day.” She said walking out and closing the curtain behind her.

Gerard took his clothes off and piled them all in the bag the nurse had provided him. He was completely naked. He sat down on the pad quickly so he wouldn’t make a mess in the floor. He pulled each arm of the pink gown on. He reached behind his head and tied the top of it. He looked down at his chest and sighed. “I look like a complete idiot,” he mumbled touching the taped slits with his fingers.

He looked over at Frank and was met with the flash of a camera.

“Dude! Don’t make a picture of me wearing this!” Gerard growled.

“Ah come on it’s for posterity.” Frank assured him popping down to kiss him on the cheek then returning to his seat.

The nurse appeared through the curtain again.

“Ok we need to get your IV started.” She said opening a tray on the small counter beside the bed.

“I can do this, I can do this, I can do this, I can do this.” Gerard repeated to himself closing his eyes.

“I promise I will insert this as gently as possible.” The nurse assured him tying off his arm with a rubber cord.

Frank moved his chair over near the bed and held Gerard’s free hand.

The nurse got his IV started without much effort. Gerard made it through without crying surprisingly. The nurse hooked up the foetal monitor. Gerard lay back watching his contractions climb slowly and descend every few minutes. He thought he would be in more pain than he was. It wasn’t bothering him all that much. Frank had flipped on the television. He was watching a rerun of Steven’s Untitled Rock Show on Fuse. Gerard listened as the baby’s heartbeat echoed in time with the video playing.

The curtain opened and in walked the doctor.

“Mr. Way,” he said loudly. Gerard felt the butterflies in his stomach once more.

“I need to check you internally.” The doctor informed him.

Gerard immediately wanted to vomit. He exhaled a huff. This wasn’t something he expected them to have to do. He was having a C-section.

They lowered the head of the bed laying him flat. The nurse moved the sheet, having him prop his legs up and spread them. He wanted to die, and there sat Frank watching it all. Gerard didn’t look at him; he just pretended he was invisible.

The doctor quickly lubricated his gloved fingers and slid them into him. Gerard took a deep breath and let it out. He was prepared for the doctor to go farther but was surprised when the doctor removed his fingers. Gerard opened his eyes as the nurse lowered his legs covering him again with the sheet.

“We have to get you back, you are progressing too quickly. We can’t have the baby descending too far down and damaging anything.” The doctor explained.

Gerard’s heart started to beat faster.

“Ok let’s get him shaved and prepped,” The doctor directed his statement to the nurse standing beside him. She nodded in agreement.

“I will see you in the OR.” The doctor said patting Gerard on the leg leaving the room.

Two other nurses entered through the curtain. All three worked on him at once. One fiddled with his IV bag. Another nurse flipped his sheet down and his pink gown up proceeding to shave pubic area and lower stomach. The last nurse had him sign papers. He gave them permission to give him blood on one page, permission to give him spinal anaesthesia, permission to treat the baby in the event it had problems immediately after birth. He signed a waiver so they couldn’t be sued if he died. The last paper was giving them permission to perform a complete hysterectomy. He didn’t even think about it, he just signed them like he was autographing photos at a meet and greet. His mind was numb with fright. All he could think about was the fact that he was going to be cut open.

He looked at Frank who had his knees drawn up in the chair watching what they were doing to him.

Frank found Gerard’s eyes staring at him. He mouthed the words, “I love you so much” to him.

Gerard returned a nervous smile and cast his eyes up at the ceiling.

“Okay Mr. Way… It's time to go to the operating room.” The nurse told him smiling.

Gerard took a deep breath and let it out. He suddenly realized they were moving his bed and Frank was still sitting in the chair. He stretched out his hand stopping the bed by grabbing the large doorway as they passed through it.

“Wait I thought you said he could come with me?” Gerard asked looking back at Frank, the panic evident in his voice.

Frank jumped up and hurried over to him.

“Its okay, I will be in there.” Frank said pulling Gerard’s hand from the doorway.

“Yes he will be in there. We have to get you on the gurney and strapped down first.” Another nurse explained.

”Strapped down! What the fuck… why?” Gerard panicked every ounce of composure left him. He started balling his eyes out. He started to hyperventilate right there, his bed half way out in the hall. A nurse jogged to another room off from the hall.

Frank stepped up beside the bed. He took hold of both of Gerard’s hands. He squeezed them tight.

“Gerard calm down. Gerard look at me. It is okay. It is going to be okay. Look at me. Look at my eyes.” Frank said finally gaining the berserk man’s attention.

Gerard blinked at him closing his mouth, tears streaming down his face.

“You are not going to do this without me. I am going to be right by your side. I wouldn’t miss our baby being born for the world. There isn’t a doctor or nurse in this hospital that will keep me out of that room.” He said with a soothing tone.

Gerard sniffed letting go of Frank’s hand swiping at his nose.

The nurse returned with a syringe. She plunged it into a joint in Gerard’s IV tube. “This will help you relax a bit.” She said pushing all the liquid into the line.

“I am going to put on the scrubs they brought me and the nurse will bring me in. I swear I will be there before you know it.” Frank assured him.

He grabbed Gerard’s face and kissed his lips. He didn’t give a shit who was watching.

“I love you, I swear to God I will be in there in a just a few minutes.” Frank said watching them roll Gerard down the hall.
